How Learning Works

This four-part series will engage faculty in a virtual conversation exploring 8 research-based strategies for “smart teaching” based on a new book, How Learning Works (2nd edition). We promise these strategies are ones you will return to again and again throughout the term, covering research and teaching tips on essential topics from student motivation to giving practice and feedback to developing more self-directed learning.

Complete the Faculty Interest Form before Friday, September 6, so we can determine the best day and time to hold the sessions. The link to the form is available to HPU faculty and can be found in the 8/15/24 email from csybrant@hpu.edu.

Here are the four sessions:

  • Session 1: Promote Student Self-Directed Learning (chapter 8)
  • Session 2: Optimize Learning: Prior Knowledge & Organization (chapters 2 & 3)
  • Session 3: Boost Student Success thru Motivation, Mastery & Effective Feedback (chapters 4-6)
  • Session 4: Enhance Course Climate for Belonging & Learning (chapters 4 & 7)
