Instructional Media Possibilities
There are different types of instructional media that can be incorporated into a hybrid or online course. The approach you take will depend on the purpose of the video. Following are some commonly used approaches to instructional media that can be included in distance learning courses to help students effectively navigate and engage in learning.
COURSE INTRODUCTION
Introduction videos help set the stage for the course. Use course introductions to go over key components of the syllabus, introduce yourself, and get students excited about the class.
- Outline the “journey” of the course.
- Communicate your love for the subject matter.
- Highlight some strategies for success in the course.
COURSE NAVIGATION
Navigation videos show students how to maneuver throughout the course, explaining the syllabus, course schedule, module structure, etc.
- Aim for clarity to avoid repetitive questions.
- Walk through anything with students that may be new to them.
MODULE INTRODUCTION
Module introduction videos give students an overview of what to expect in the coming week, topic, or unit.
- Highlight the upcoming course activities and topics with excitement.
- Provide an engaging question or idea to grab students’ attention.
“HOW TO” INSTRUCTIONS
How to videos indicate how to navigate the course materials or complete assignments.
- Walk students through components like the syllabus, course schedule, lab procedures, project instructions, discussion forums, and submitting assignments.
VIDEO LESSONS
Video lessons communicate the course content. The content should be chunked into small sections to help students navigate new ideas and maintain attention without overloading them.
- Produce videos in 10-15 minute chunks to keep students watching.
- Teach students how to bookmark and use the notes feature in Panopto to help them become more active consumers of information.
FEEDBACK VIDEO
Consider recording short videos to provide feedback to students individually or as a class.
- Keep it conversational.
- Be specific.
- Explain how students can grow using the feedback provided.
One reason for including instructional media in a distance learning course is to clearly communicate expectations and content. However, it is also an excellent mechanism for instructor presence in a course, providing varied opportunities for students to see and hear their instructor. Another benefit is that students can consume video content at their own pace, with the ability to rewind and review when needed.
