Pia Berg Yuen, PhD

Adjunct Lecturer

Dr. Pia Berg Yuen is an Adjunct Professor at HPU, bringing a wealth of over 20 years of international experience in banking across the US and Europe, spanning both government and private sectors. Her academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Management Studies from Cambridge University (2008), with her research centered on operational risk capital in banking.

Throughout her career, Dr. Berg Yuen has held significant roles that bridge academia and the financial sector. Her professional journey in Hawai’i includes positions such as: Model Governance Manager and Model Validation Manager at First Hawaiian Bank, and Data Scientist and Operations Excellence Manager at American Savings Bank. Extending her expertise to academia, she has served as a lecturer at both the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and Chaminade University, instructing students in business and statistics courses.

Prior to her work in private banking, she served as a bank inspector at the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority. Her expertise is further underscored by her postdoctoral research associate roles at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in Washington D.C., and the Munitions Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, where she initially studied mathematics, computer science, and economics, she holds an M.S. in Applied Mathematics from Stockholm University, an MBA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a B.A. in Psychology from HPU. Fun fact: She represented the Swedish Women's National Rugby Team for a decade, competing in two World Cups.
