HAWAII LOA CAMPUS POWER OUTAGE: UPDATE AS OF APRIL 14, 2024, 7:50 PM

This afternoon, a strong storm in Kaneohe downed an electrical pole on the Hawaii Loa campus.Thankfully, no one was injured and everyone on that campus is fine. At this time, however, there is no power at the Hawaii Loa campus, and a Hawaiian Electric crew is on site working to restore power.

We have increased campus security staff at Hawaii Loa. In addition, we are working on bringing in extra generators and have distributed extra lighting to residents in the dorms. Aramark has delivered food for tonight. Please note the campus has both cold and hot water.

Campus security staff will continue to allow Hawaii Loa campus student residents and essential personnel on the property. Non-essential personnel who work at HLC should check in with their supervisors and work remotely from home, if granted permission, until potential power is restored or until further notice from their supervisors.

Classes and labs held at Hawaii Loa campus are canceled for tomorrow, Monday, April 15. Classes, offices, and activities at our downtown facilities are not affected and will operate as normally scheduled. We will have additional shuttles tomorrow to bring Hawaii Loa residents to our downtown campus, if needed. The first shuttle will depart HLC for downtown at 6:20 a.m. on Monday. The Dining Hall at Pier Nine at ATM will be prepared to accommodate HLC student residents for breakfast.

We will send another update as information becomes available.

HLC student residents with questions should contact HPU Security at (808) 544-1400.  Students with specific questions about classes at the Hawaii Loa campus should contact their faculty members. Faculty and staff with specific questions should contact Aric Larsen, Director of Facilities, at (808) 544-1400.

The safety of our campus community is our top priority. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of everyone.

The Security and Safety Department at Hawai’i Pacific University is dedicated to providing the students, staff, and faculty with a safe and secure working environment.  Our team of both in-house and contract security professionals train constantly and maintain a close liaison with law enforcement and security community leaders to enhance that mission.  Our security officers are licensed by the State of Hawaii Security Guard program and consistently exceed the minimum training requirements of the program.  All are trained in CPR/First Aid/AED and licensed accordingly.  Security Officers also receive annual training regarding federal laws such as the: Clery Act, Violence Against Women Act, Title IX, and other rules germane to protecting students and staff.  OSHA safety principles are covered in daily briefings and unsafe conditions are constantly looked for through frequent inspections.

Although Hawaii Pacific University is separated into three separate geographical areas, security personnel are assigned under a unified supervisory structure.  All officers on duty report to a lead officer who in turn report to the HPU Security Center at the Aloha Tower Marketplace location. Incoming telephone calls can also be directed to any location thru the center.  This process facilitates the flow of information to whoever needs it and simplifies coordination of security efforts.

Campus locations where students are housed have a security presence 24 hours a day seven days a week.  The downtown campus has security coverage during working hours Monday thru Friday 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM and on Saturday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  If security is required after working hours, requests can be made through the HPU Security Center and security officers can be dispatched.
