Preceptors

Aloha mai kākou,

Mahalo for visiting the Hawaiʻi Pacific University Preceptor webpage for the Physician Assistant (PA) Program. This is intended to provide information about the PA Program at Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU), the structure of the clinical education phase of the program, clinical year courses, expectations for clinical rotations, and resources with tips, tools, and guidance for PA student preceptors.

The HPU PA Program is a 24-month rigorous graduate level program consisting of one year of didactic instruction and one year of clinical education with clinical rotations or Supervised Clinical Practice Experiences (SCPEs). Students will rotate through eight 5-week SCPEs across seven required disciplines (emergency medicine, surgical medicine, inpatient internal medicine, behavioral medicine, family medicine, women’s health, pediatric medicine), and an elective clinical rotation specialty. Clinical preceptors for SCPEs must be physicians (MD or DO), physician assistants (PAs), or other licensed health care providers who have national board certification and hold a valid license to practice at the clinical site.

Preceptors are vital to teaching and mentoring students in the clinical education year. By working closely with physicians, PAs, and other licensed health care providers in the clinical setting, PA students learn from your expertise and guidance. The PA student progressively develops and strengthens the skills and clinical judgment necessary to become a practicing PA through your teaching and supervision.

If you are already a preceptor for the HPU PA Program, mahalo nui loa for your time and commitment. If you are interested in becoming a preceptor, please fill out the Preceptor form or reach out via email to our program director (email listed below).

Please visit the full preceptor resource page at Exxat. Please also visit our main program page for more information about the PA program. We hope that you will find this information helpful. Please contact us at any time with any questions or comments.

Mahalo nui for your interest in the HPU PA Program.
