Verbal Language

What it means to Look closer. See further. Do more.

We look closer when we understand that things are rarely as they first appear, and that changing the world starts with changing our perspective. So we get up-close and personal with things, with everything. It’s a process of discovery that starts when we look closer.

We see further when we know that the journey to true understanding proceeds from looking closer, to viewing the big picture. This proven process enables us to see how the pieces fit together to complete the puzzle. This is how we see further.

We do more when we take action, when we take education and our work as communicators into our own hands. In this way, in looking closer and seeing further, we learn and live to do more for our students, faculty and staff, alumni, and community partners.

Elevator Pitch, Short

Use to quickly tell our story in a casual setting and in a conversational tone.

We’re a private, nonprofit university on the Hawaiian island of O‘ahu.

Our campuses in downtown Honolulu and at the foot of the Ko‘olau Mountains on the windward side of the island enable students to enjoy the best of both worlds, a vibrant, international city and a stunningly-beautiful, tropical setting. And with students and faculty from around the world—we’re the most culturally-rich, private university in the U.S.—they also experience the best of all worlds.

Fusing this unmatched cultural diversity with personal support and a deliberately intimate learning environment, HPU enables students to get up-close and personal with the subjects they’re most passionate about. And when they do, when they look closer, they are empowered to see further and to do more. It’s how we ensure our graduates enter a competitive global workplace market-ready.

Sample Positioning’s, Colleges & Programs

Whether we’re studying facts or figures, nomenclatures or numbers, creativity and critical thinking factor into every equation at the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. Our faculty, arriving at HPU from top mathematics programs around the world, teach students to think beyond the lecture hall structure, to look closer at problems, see solutions, and to do more both on campus and in their career.

Hawai‘i’s location at the center of the Pacific Rim makes it one of the most dynamic and globally important regions in the world. The HPU College of Business connects students directly to the region through Honolulu, a hub of industry and a key recruiting destination for Fortune 500 companies. The bottom line? Opportunities abound for students, including access to internships, partnerships, and hands-on experiences that prepare you for leadership and ready you for the real world.

The humanities thrive in parts of the world where distinct cultures come together. In a single word, that’s Hawai‘i. Students at the HPU College of Liberal Arts connect daily with diverse perspectives and unique worldviews, learning to look closely at ideas and think critically for themselves. As a result, graduates find themselves intellectually enriched, prepared for the world, and ready to do more in a wide range of professions and career paths.

For students passionate about nursing, public health, and social work, HPU’s College of Health and Society brings it all together. They look closer at the issues that matter, and see further through hands-on clinical experiences across Hawai‘i, and do more to make an impact in the world. From aiding Ebola clinics in Africa to supporting natural disaster areas in Asia and the Pacific, our graduates go on to improve lives around the globe.

Studying the natural world makes a lot more sense when your classroom is an island paradise. The Department of Natural Sciences, nestled at the foot of the Ko‘olau Mountains on our Hawai‘i Loa Campus, with an additional presence at the Oceanic Institute in Waimanalo, puts students and faculty right at the heart of the subjects we teach and research—from biology to oceanography to environmental studies and sciences. Our students gain first-hand knowledge of the world, giving them an advantage in diving into meaningful careers and extraordinary lives.

It’s hard to imagine a better place to study marine life than on an island, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. Marine Sciences provides students an extraordinary platform from which to deep dive into the world of aquaculture and gain an even deeper understanding of the field. Having looked closer at the issues and seen further through hands-on experience, you can set out to do more in your career, prepared to make big waves in the world.

Helping people is at the heart of our profession. At HPU’s Nursing program, we help students develop the skills they need to become exceptional nurses and lifelong learners who are committed to humanitarian service. That begins in the rich, multicultural environment of Hawai‘i, where you’ll learn to think critically and engage with many diverse perspectives in the classroom and clinical settings. This hands-on knowledge prepares you to practice confidently in the ever-changing healthcare industry, so you can go forth and improve people’s lives anywhere in the world.

Bring your passion for learning, and the HPU School of Education will make sure you leave prepared to be an outstanding teacher. We’re committed to fueling our students’ professional growth, providing a rigorous program, personal support from faculty, and real-world experiences creating curriculums and lessons for a diverse range of students. From here, you’ll be confident in your ability and fully prepared to lead a classroom.

Solving practical challenges at the intersection of math and science is what most engineers do. Launching in the Fall of 2018, Engineering at HPU will add a key ingredient to the mix—creative thinking. Our students will learn to look closer at problems, examining them from many different angles before developing solutions that meet desired needs within realistic constraints. Ultimately, graduates will be empowered to extend this process to a range of different disciplines, which is one of the reasons why our engineering graduates will be in such high demand and command great salaries across Hawai‘i and around the world.

How does the mind really work? Why does it make people behave the way they do? HPU’s Psychology Department provides a diverse learning environment at the crossroads of cultures and perspectives where you can seek out the answers to these questions and others like them. With a supportive faculty by your side, you can take a closer look at the discipline from all angles and extend your knowledge through clinical research. After gaining active, hands-on experience at HPU, you will enter the world ready to grasp whatever opportunities come next.

As the modern world gets more complex, gaining a better understanding of the major issues and perspectives at play has never been more important. HPU’s International Studies and Diplomacy program helps students do exactly that and more. Campus sits squarely in the Pacific Rim, a unique crossroads of cultures and traditions containing nearly half the world’s population. As a result, you can interact first-hand from people with diverse viewpoints, and learn to think for yourself through hands-on research. With all of these experiences at your back, you’ll find yourself ready to take on any of the challenges facing our world, and to make a difference doing so.

How do people convey their ideas across contexts, channels, and cultures? HPU’s Department of Communication puts you in a place to explore the answers. With a curriculum rooted in the history, theory, and techniques of communication, we give students the foundational knowledge they need. At the heart of the Hawaiian Islands—a true crossroads of cultures —students learn to frame and express their ideas so they can communicate effectively and ethically with people from diverse backgrounds, across many different platforms. Here, you will prepare yourself to do more in a world that grows more complex with every tweet.

Make yourself a standout candidate for medical school and other health professional schools. The HPU Pre-Medical/Pre-Health Certificate Program guides you through the entire preparation and application process. Our program is intended for students that have already earned a BA/BS/BFA degree and wish to apply to allopathic medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, naturopathic medicine, physical therapy or veterinary medicine schools. Guided supervision is provided by the Pre-Health Professions Specialist and the Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee.

Because every student in Hawai’i deserves the chance to earn their degree and do more with their lives.
