News and Social Media Reporter

Job Summary

This is a part-time student worker position.

This role is focused on telling Hawaiʻi Pacific University stories across the ʻOhana news hub and HPU’s social media channels. Working collaboratively with the Editorial Services team and the Social Media Manager, student reporters gather stories, conduct interviews, and create engaging, social-first content that highlights campus life, student achievements, faculty expertise, and university events.
This role is ideal for students interested in journalism, public relations, marketing, digital media, or storytelling.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting and Story Development (50%)

  • Identify, pitch, and report on newsworthy stories involving students, faculty, staff, alumni, programs, and events.
  • Conduct short interviews (in person, by email, or via Zoom).
  • Write clear, engaging articles, briefs, Q&As, or profiles for the ʻOhana news hub.
  • Coordinate with the department editorial team to ensure produced content is fact checked and meets editorial standards.

Social Media Reporting and Content Creation (35%)

  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager to translate stories into social-first content.
  • Write captions, headlines, and short-form copy that drive traffic to ʻOhana stories.
  • Assist with live or near-real-time coverage of events (as assigned).
  • Capture basic photos or short videos to support storytelling.

Editorial and Team Collaboration (15%)

  • Contribute ideas during planning meetings.
  • Coordinate with editors to align content with institutional voice and brand standards.


QUALIFICATIONS

MINIMUM:

  • Strong interest in storytelling, journalism, communications, public relations, or media.
  • Ability to write clearly and conversationally for a general audience.
  • Comfortable talking with people and asking questions.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and basic fact-checking skills.

DESIRED:

  • Experience with social media platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, etc.).
  • Familiarity with AP Style.
  • Interest in photography, videography, or multimedia storytelling.
