Joy Bliss at the 48th Sigma Theta Tau International Biennial Convention in Indianapolis.
HPU Assistant Professor of Nursing and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Chair Joy A. Bliss, Ph.D., RN, attended the Sigma Theta Tau International’s (Sigma) 48th Biennial Convention from November 8-11, where more than 2,000 global nurse leaders gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the organization’s largest and most prestigious event, celebrating excellence, scholarship, and leadership in nursing worldwide.
Representing the HPU’s School of Nursing (SON) and the Gamma Psi Chapter of Hawai‘i, Bliss served in dual leadership roles as a chapter leader, vice president-HPU SON and official chapter delegate in the Sigma House of Delegates. During the proceedings, Bliss participated in key policy discussions and cast an official vote electing HPU Associate Professor Jessica Nishikawa, DPN, as Sigma’s Global Regional Coordinator for North America Region 1, “Arctic to the Islands,” the regional network in which the Gamma Psi Chapter proudly belongs.
The convention’s theme, “Represent, Reflect, Respect, Respond,” served as a unifying call to action, emphasizing Sigma’s commitment to inclusivity, cultural humility, and responsive leadership within a global nursing landscape that continues to evolve.
The four-day convention featured more than 800 oral and poster presentations, plenary sessions with international thought leaders, and networking forums designed to foster innovation and collaboration across borders. Educational sessions highlighted advancements in simulation technology, nursing education, global health equity, leadership development, and interprofessional teamwork.
Delegates also visited Sigma’s International Headquarters in Indianapolis—the birthplace of the honor society—celebrating more than a century of advancing world health and nursing excellence.
“It was truly inspiring to engage with nurse leaders from across the globe and witness the collective energy shaping the future of our profession,” Bliss reflected. “Representing HPU and the Gamma Psi Chapter affirmed our role in contributing to the international dialogue of nursing leadership, research, and advocacy.”
Participation in this biennial event reflects HPU’s enduring commitment to global engagement, scholarly leadership, and professional service, values deeply rooted in the university’s mission and guided by the principles of pono, kuleana, and aloha.
