HPU Adjunct Public Health Faculty member Amy Woron, Ph.D., and VP, technical director of microbiology and molecular at Diagnostic Laboratory Services on Oahu, recently presented the latest sexual health innovation at one of the weekly Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu meetings. Invited by HPU colleague, Public Health Professor and Rotarian Jayne Smitten, Ph.D., Woron informed the captivated Rotary audience on the unique public health topic entitled: Making Sexual Health Accessible.

"Imagine if we could reduce barriers to sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing. Home-testing leads to improvement for treatment, less exposure to others, and inevitably improved public health outcomes," stated Woron, who oversees all detection of infectious and genetic diseases across the Hawaiian Islands.

"Sexual health as a topic is guaranteed to intrigue any audience," stated Smitten. This well-received topic was no exception. One long-term Rotarian stated emphatically it was "one of the most eye-catching, most alluring topics in my 18 years at Metro Honolulu Rotary!"

Woron has more than three decades of experience in clinical microbiology, molecular diagnostics and public health preparedness. She also delivers training programs related to biological incident response through the National Domestic Preparedness Consortium. This is another example of where HPU professors, both full-time and adjunct faculty who are top in their academic fields, engage with our Hawaiian community service organizations to disseminate indispensable information through engaging presentations based on best practices for applied and industry knowledge.

HPU professors Woron and Smitten take pride in immersing themselves in local community organizations that have a global reach to many public health communities of practice. Disseminating public health best practices and current trends and demonstrating innovations focused on what is really happening in our communities, is the fundamental public health service goal for our Hawaiian community partners.

"As a goal from the HPU public health faculty, and one that promotes current practices and innovations in the world of academia, ultimately this affects the public health outcomes in our communities of practice. Woron effectively achieved this goal in her presentation to our Rotary guests and members," said Smitten.
