On March 20th, 2023, HPU hosted the “CARE4U” event, imagined by Shanna Khayat, a student in the master’s in strategic communication program, and developed in collaboration with Sina Saade and Clarissa Klingelhoeller, also students in the same program.

The event aimed to support mental health and promote women's empowerment during Women's Empowerment Month, and was made possible by the support of HPU Senior Lecturer AnnMarie Manzulli, who supervised the project.

The CARE4U event focused on addressing the mental health challenges faced by students, particularly women, and developing tangible solutions to support those affected, especially in the context of the increased mental health issues exacerbated by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The event featured inspiring guest speakers who led workshops to empower and connect with participants:

  • Michael Havoc, from Trident Adventures Hawaii, conducted a self-defense workshop, providing participants with tools to feel empowered and learn self-defense moves.
  • Elizabeth, also known as @curvysurfergirl on Instagram, who embodies women empowerment and inclusion of all body types in sports, led a workshop on promoting inclusivity in surfing.
  • Paula, from Yoga Room Hawaii, conducted a yin yoga and meditation workshop, helping participants to reconnect their minds and bodies, and feel aligned again.

Despite starting with no budget, the CARE4U event turned out to be a huge success, thanks to the support from sponsors such as ACLM Department and SAFAC, and the promotion by the HPU marketing and communication department.

Khayat, the student behind the CARE4U event, expressed her gratitude, stating, "We are thrilled with the success of CARE4U and the positive impact it had on our fellow students. It was truly inspiring to see the HPU community come together to support mental health and women's empowerment."

HPU continues to prioritize mental health and empowerment initiatives, recognizing the importance of addressing these issues among students and the broader population.
