Aloha inspired Pathways to Peace

Pilina - Deep Relationship and Connection

Pilina means relationship, connection, and union — the deep, enduring bonds that join people to one another, to their ancestors, and to the ʻāina (land) that sustains them. Pilina does not happen by chance, but is built through participation, respect, and responsibility. Pilina creates the trust that makes honest dialogue possible — and honest dialogue is where peace begins.

ʻIke - Knowledge, Insight and Understanding

ʻIke means to see, to know, to perceive, and to experience — a holistic way of knowing that engages mind, senses, and spirit. More than information, ʻike is wisdom drawn from prior lessons and applied with discernment to the challenges of today. Peacebuilders grounded in ʻike seek to truly understand the people, cultures, and history of a situation before they seek resolution.

Hoʻoponopono - To Set Right

Hoʻoponopono, meaning "to make right, doubly right," is Hawaiʻi's traditional practice of reconciliation and healing. In the ʻohana (family) setting, all affected parties gathered to speak truthfully, listen without blame, forgive, and release — restoring relationships, not merely settling disputes. It teaches that peace is more than the absence of conflict; it is the active restoration of the relationships and communities that conflict has wounded.
