Oceanic Institute

The Oceanic Institute of Hawaii Pacific University (OI) is a non-profit research and development organization dedicated to aquaculture, biotechnology, and coastal resource management. Our mission is to develop and transfer environmentally responsible technologies to increase aquatic food production and while promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources.

Highlights of Our Work

The Oceanic Institute's first-ever successful cultivation of captive-bred yellow tang

Development of captive-rearing techniques for native Hawaiian food fishes, to restock ancient fishponds

Maturation, hatchery, nursery, and growout techniques for multiple fish species

The Institute's Goals

OI’s goals are to work with foundations, industry partners, government agencies, academia, and non-governmental organizations to:

  1. Partner in research, technology transfer, and training in areas of aquaculture, food security, marine conservation, and job diversification
  2. Enhance OI’s scientific reputation and dissemination of information through research publications and effective use of social media
  3. Participate in workforce development and education using aquaculture as a platform for STEM disciplines
