The Honolulu Museum of Art has been supporting Indigenous filmmakers since it hosted the Sundance Institute’s Native ShortsLab in 2016. It is proud to continue this relationship through the annual Sundance Institute Indigenous Film Tour.
The 2026 Sundance Institute Indigenous Film Tour is a free theatrical program featuring the award-winning Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild] from the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.

Trapped in museum archives, Ancestors bend time and space to find their way home. History, spirituality, and the law collide as tribal repatriation specialists fight to return and rebury Indigenous human remains, offering a revealing look at the still-pervasive worldviews that justified collecting them in the first place. Documentary feature.
Sundance started this film tour in 2021 as a virtual presentation in conjunction with museums, Native cultural centers, and arthouse cinemas. This year it continues as an in-person program. The selection curated by the Institute’s Indigenous Program team reflects a multiplicity of Indigenous perspectives, showcasing inventive storytelling from Indigenous artists who have previously screened their projects at the Festival.

Sundance Institute has a proud history of supporting talented Indigenous directors including Erica Tremblay, Taika Waititi, Blackhorse Lowe, Sterlin Harjo, Sky Hopinka, Caroline Monnet, Fox Maxy, and Shaandiin Tome. Support for screenings is provided by the Mellon Foundation.
