Retirement is supposed to come with a slower calendar, but HPU Faculty Emeritus Ken Schoolland didn’t get the memo. After retiring from HPU in August 2025 (while continuing his affiliation), Schoolland kept doing what he’s always done best: taking big economic ideas, packing them into plain language, and carrying them to new audiences.

On November 11, Schoolland spoke on the “Lessons of Economic Reform from New Zealand,” in the Freedom Seminar Series at Northwood University in Midland, Michigan. Drawing lessons from his economics book, The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible, he also presented guest lectures in four economics classes on campus and appeared on a podcast.

A few days later, Schoolland delivered a talk, “The Hidden Weapon of Freedom: How Economic Empowerment & Freedom Defeats Extremism & Authoritarianism,” on November 16 at the Toronto Democracy Forum of the Third Annual World Anti-Extremism Network Conference in Toronto, Canada.

While in Toronto, Schoolland also spoke about “Entrepreneurship & Corruption” before the ENACTUS Club at the Toronto Metropolitan University on behalf of the Institute for Liberal Studies.

If all this travel feels familiar, it’s because it is. Schoolland has long been one of HPU’s most recognizable faculty voices, and HPU’s longest-serving professor, with 45 years at the University. In 2025, he was named HPU Teacher of the Year after a surprise in-class announcement that turned into a standing ovation.

We can’t wait to see where 2026 takes Schoolland next.
