M.Ed. in Educational Leadership

The Master’s in Educational Leadership is a one-year, online degree program for teachers that already possess a license and/or are already practitioners.  The program will consist of 33 credits that will broaden one’s approach to teaching in K-12 settings. Students will have an opportunity to become educational leaders through a comprehensive preparation program that will expose students to current educational issues and trends.

Guided by a profound belief in active, collaborative, experiential, reflective, and transformative learning as well as a deep commitment to diversity and educational technology, this degree program is based on an innovative, inquiry-oriented, standards-driven, and field-based curriculum that integrates content and pedagogy and employs an electronic portfolio-based assessment system to evaluate students’ progress toward achieving professional standards.  In addition, HPU provides teachers with cutting edge, course web page technology tools and access to online periodical databases in education.

University faculty, teachers, and principals join in a unique partnership to deliver an innovative curriculum that has been designed to develop professional educators who are reflective practitioners dedicated to the scholarship of teaching and learning and school renewal. This partnership forms the basis for an alumni ‘ohana that provides continuing mentoring and support to its graduates.

Participants will have an opportunity to become educational leaders through this comprehensive preparation program, which includes ten 3-credit courses and an action research capstone project. Courses will expose students to current educational issues related to diversity, social justice, technology, budgeting, legal issues, etc. and trends. With six, 8-week terms, students can complete their program of study in one year taking two classes each term. Part-time options are also available. This master's program is designed for teachers already possessing a license.

Students who complete the Master of Education in Educational Leadership will:

  • Understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline(s) he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students.

  • Understand how children learn and develop and can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual, social, and personal development.

  • Understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and create instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.

  • Understand and use a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students’ development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

  • Use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

  • Use knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.

  • Plan instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community, and curriculum goals.

  • Understand and use formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the learner.

  • Are reflective practitioners who continually evaluate the effects of their choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively seek out opportunities to grow professionally.

  • Foster relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well-being.
