HPU Secures the National Student Advertising Competition District Win

Hawai‘i Pacific University mass communication students are the first place district winners of the 2019 National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) held on Saturday, Apr. 27 at the Honolulu Club. The team will proceed to the semi-finals phase of the competition on May 8.

NSAC is sponsored by American Advertising Federation (AAF). It is an annual nationwide competition for undergraduate students from more than 150 colleges and universities. Each year a corporate sponsor provides a case study of a real-world marketing and advertising challenge. The 2019 NSAC client, Wienerschnitzel, the world’s largest hot dog chain, challenged students to develop a $25 million advertising campaign to change the perception of a hot dog by targeting “trendmakers and connectors” as defined in the case study.

HPU’s team is comprised of 12 cross-talented students who contributed to the winning 20-page campaign strategy including a media plan and production of several creative advertising executions. Four students were selected to present a 20-minute campaign pitch to a panel of judges.

The district competition is judged by industry professionals selected by AAF Hawaii District 13 coordinator Paul Lam and co-coordinator Noah Tom and their team. However, this year, the corporate sponsor surprised District 13 and the judges included J.R. Galardi, President/COO, Wienerschnitzel. Judges also included industry professionals, Patrick Leonard, Honolulu Club, Jesse Arneson, Welcome Stranger, Laura Ward, Family of Companies, Lindsay Schedler, MVNP, and Marissa Guerrero, Outrigger Hotels.

The next step in the competition is the virtual semi-final round, which is a 20-minute video presentation and a 10-minute conference call Q&A with a panel of national judges. All first-place district winners will compete for one of eight national finalist spots. The top eight teams will advance to the national competition held in conjunction with ADMERICA, AAF’s national conference, which this year will be held in Hollywood, Florida.
