Executive Director of Oceanic Institute Shaun Moss, Ph.D., gave a talk at the 5th Bengal Global Business Summit in Kolkata, India, on February 8, entitled “Science-Based Shrimp Farming in West Bengal: Big Business For Domestic and Global Markets.” He was one of more than 450 delegates from 35 countries participating in the summit.

During the summit, Moss, on behalf of Oceanic Institute of Hawai‘i Pacific University, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture, Aquatic Resources, and Fishing Harbor, Government of West Bengal, India, to promote shrimp farming in the region. The scientists of OI will provide West Bengal and its shrimp farmers technical knowledge and infrastructure support to produce postlarvae (baby shrimp) to stock in the ponds.

With an abundance of land available in West Bengal for shrimp farming, the farmers can expand their operations and the export of shrimp overseas, generating more revenue.
