Navy Commander and Foreign Policy Advisor among the Guest Speakers for International Relations Class

CDR Odom leading a discussion at INTR3000 course at Hickam Air Force Base

CDR Jonathan Odom from the Daniel K Inouye Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies (DKI-APCSS) led a discussion on maritime security on Thursday, Feb. 7, with Hawai‘i Pacific University students studying international relations through the College of Professional Studies-Military Campus Programs at Hickam Air Force Base. DKI-APCSS is the US Department of Defense Regional Center providing resident and distributive academic courses for US and partner nations across the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.

The HPU students, who are enrolled in the eight-week hybrid INTR 3000 course taught by Col. (Ret.) John Hansen, are preparing their term papers focused on international relations in and around the South China Sea. Commander Odom’s insights on the role and rule of law regarding maritime law and issues within the maritime commons provided invaluable referential information for the students as they analyze relations in the region.

On Thursday, Jan. 31, the INTR 3000 course students welcomed guest speaker Du Tran, career foreign service officer, US Department of State, and deputy foreign policy advisor, headquarters, US Indo-Pacific Command. Tran discussed with the students his role with Indo-PACOM and national and regional strategies, reinforcing political science theory and application central to course curriculum. Additionally, he shared his experiences as a career civil servant and foreign service officer with students curious about such a career path after graduation.

The University has a rich and growing tradition of collaboration with DKI-APCSS, hosting HPU student fellowships and sharing faculty expertise. The INTR 3000 course has had faculty from the regional center as well as experts from headquarters, US Indo-Pacific Command Halawa Heights. These faculty add to a high-quality learning environment with real-world operationally experienced experts enhancing academic studies.
