School of Social Work Launches its Master of Social Work Military and Veteran Affairs Focus Fall 2018
The School of Social Work is pleased and excited to launch our new Military and Veteran Affairs focus for the Master of Social Work degree at Hawaii Pacific University. Commencing Fall 2018, this concentration will address the needs of active military service personnel, veterans, military spouses and their families and look at some of the key issues impacting this population including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), homelessness, relocation, financial difficulties and civilian reintegration.

Simulations in the BSW Program
This year the BSW students had the chance to participate in hands-on learning experiences known as simulations. Their first simulation was a macro level experience that gave students the chance to look at some of the systemic issues surrounding poverty, while their second simulation was an individual micro experience where students practiced their engagement and assessment skills.

A Comparative Study of Factors Contributing to Substance Use: Military vs. Civilian Youth
Military children experience a unique lifestyle within the military community that classify them as a special population. These unique experiences include: separation from the active duty parent during deployment, frequent relocation due to changes in military assignments, routine changes, increased responsibilities, and threat of death or injury to the service member in the family (Park, 2011).

Qualitative Study on the Usage of Single Room Occupancies to House Severely Mentally Ill & Low-Income Homeless Individuals
In January 2018, BSW student Lavon Petersen conducted a mixed-methods analysis of the impacts of using single room occupancies (SROs) to house persons experiencing severe mental ill (SMI). SROs are the most common type of supported housing designed to house those persons whose income falls far below the poverty threshold. Thus, the intention of this research study was to develop an unbiased view on the current issues that ascend across supported housing programs for SMI and obtain the consumer’s perspective on their supported housing experiences.

Meet the New Dean of CHS!
Dean Halaevalu F.O. Vakalahi is an immigrant Pacific Islander woman of Tongan heritage, born in Tonga and groomed on the North Shore of `Oahu. Before HPU, she was a Professor and Associate Dean in the School of Social Work at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD. She received her B.S. in Business Management from BYU-Hawai`i, MSW from the University of Hawai`i - Manoa, and PhD in Social Work from the University of Utah.
