Student Short Films to Play at Hawai‘i International Film Festival (HIFF)

For the 38thannual HIFF (Nov. 8-18), two HPU Multimedia Cinematic Production (MMCP) students were selected to screen their short films at the first ever HIFF competitive University Showcase. The HPU films selected were Silent Music by Yukari Kamiya (BA MMCP, 2018), and Bud and Daisy by Gabriella Marzullo (BA MMCP, 2018). Earlier this year, Marzullo was also the winner of the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Award for Best Creative Capstone Project at the annual Capstone Symposium.

The new University category at HIFF was campaigned for by HPU festival reporters participating in the HPU@HIFF Collaboration (since 2010) and especially the two past presidents of the HPU Cinematic Multimedia Club, Jack Martinez (BS Mass Communication, 2017) and Lauren Martinez (BS Mass Communication, 2018). In a letter to HIFF in 2017, Jack Martinez wrote: “Ideally, we want the competition open to all university students the world over. We want to compete with the best in the world. If our work gets in, great, if not, we still want to support this important endeavor.”

The new competition category for university-level filmmakers was announced in August 2018 by HIFF Executive Director Beckie Stochetti. Stochetti recognized the special parameters faced by university students making films on short turnaround time as part of their academic course load, and she championed the new category.

The eight short films selected for this year’s HIFF University Showcase will screen Thursday, Nov. 15, at 5:45 pm at the Dole Theaters in Iwilei.

Also, the film Floating Weeds, written and directed by HPU alumnus Jimbo Lee (BA Visual Communication, 2004), was showcased at HIFF on Sunday, Nov. 11.
