College of Health and Society (CHS) Visits the USNS Mercy

Professor Burrell and Nursing students at USNS Mercy

Students in the Nursing Research class, Janet Cataby, Chona Andrea, Eurice Elefano, Andrea Lindquist, and Ashton Hartwell, along with Professor of Nursing Patricia Burrell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Public Health Emily Roberson, Ph.D., and CHS Student Services Specialist Casey Draiss, had the unique honor of touring the USNS Mercy, a 1000-bed hospital ship, on Thursday, July 5.  The Mercy is at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam as she and her crew will participate in RIMPAC 2018.

Originally built as a freighter in the 1970s, the Mercy includes 12 operating rooms and 20 intensive care beds. The Mercy is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and even includes the ability to perform robot-assisted surgery. When deployed on a mission, the Mercy has 1,200 personnel.
