HPU UN Club members with Salvatore Zappala

On Friday, March 23 through Friday, March 30, HPU United Nations Club (UNC) members participated in the 2018 National Model United Nations (NMUN) Conference in New York City. Pictured is the delegation meeting with Salvatore Zappala, Legal Advisor to The Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations. The delegation consisted of 13 HPU students (pictured from left to right): Haven McKay, Celeste Cravalho, Victoria Ristikangas, Madison Parrott, Amber Williams-Aduja, Emily Macri, Lesly Valdez, Robinah Gibola, Sally Chew, Isabelle Klewstigh, Chloe Huang, Abigail Gilbert, and Dominique Mueller. The UNC faculty advisor, Serge Marek, Ph.D., also attended the conference.

At NMUN, university students from around the world represent various countries in committees to discuss international issues relevant today. The HPU UNC students represented the Delegation of Italy and participated in various committees: the World Health Organization (WHO), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), General Assembly 1 (GA1), International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Several committees the delegation was on had their resolutions passed and sent to the real UN to be read. At the closing ceremony held at the UN Headquarters, Head Delegate Emily Macri was invited to make a speech and the Delegation of Italy also won an Honorable Mention Award. Participation in the conference is an opportunity for students to develop their skills in writing, public speaking, debate, and diplomacy, while interacting with students from around the world.
