Public Health Professor Receives State Appointment and Award

Associate Professor of Public Health Christian Gloria, Ph.D., was appointed by the Director of the Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) to the Hawaii Tobacco Prevention and Control Trust Fund Advisory Board. The board advises the DOH on the administration of the trust fund and the strategic planning for public health programs in the State of Hawaii. On March 15, the DOH reported that the last “20 years of tobacco prevention and control policies and programs resulted to a savings of $1 billion in healthcare cost to the state.” DOH news release posted here.

Additionally, Gloria was honored on Friday, March 16, with the 2018 Friend of Social Work Award by the Hawaii Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, in recognition of his service to students, the community, and the profession. He was nominated by his HPU colleague, Jessica Garlock, director of Field Education and lecturer of Social Work.
