Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) today announced the opening of the state's first collegiate Esports arena at Aloha Tower Marketplace and introduced the HPU Esports Scholarship for prospective students. The HPU Esports arena will provide students with a dedicated space for competitive and casual gaming. A soft opening was held for students on Nov. 29, with a grand opening scheduled in January 2018.

"Esports build skills that are valuable across the board - teamwork, creativity, leadership, a competitive mindset, time management, and a high level of aptitude in technology," said HPU President, John Y. Gotanda. "We're thrilled to debut our new Esports arena at Aloha Tower as it delivers on the promise of an HPU education: access to innovative programs and graduating market-ready."

The arena will be home court for HPU's varsity Esports team that includes 10 students who will compete nationally in the West Coast Conference. The HPU Esports Scholarship is available to incoming undergraduate students interested in joining HPU's Esports team and competing in the College League of Legends season. Qualified gamers can earn scholarships valued between $1,000 - $6,000 per year. More information can be found here.

Jeff Moorad, Partner and Chairman of Morgan Lewis' Global Sports Initiative and Chairman of PrimeSport, who has over 30 years of sports industry experience ranging from super-agent to CEO of the San Diego Padres noted, "Hawai'i Pacific University's new Esports team and arena demonstrate the University's commitment to innovation, and put them on the front line of a rapidly expanding trend in higher education and one of the fastest growing segments of the global sports industry. I'm excited to see HPU jump on this opportunity because Esports is where millennials are spending their time both playing and watching, and it should come as no surprise that traditional sports organizations, like the Philadelphia 76ers, Ted Leonsis's Monumental Sports & Entertainment and ESPN, are increasingly becoming involved."

The HPU Esports Arena will offer League of Legends players a premium experience with League Unlocked. Offered exclusively to official partners and live events, League Unlocked unlocks all champions, over 100 skins and offers additional bonus rewards for players. HPU is the second higher learning institution to receive access to the service. Dozens of other popular titles can also be played at the arena.

The Esports arena is made possible with generous support from main sponsor D. Suehiro Electric, Inc. It features 24 high powered gaming computers, three gaming console stations and two virtual reality stations. More information about HPU's Esports can be found here.
