President and CEO of Hawaii Pacific Health to Deliver Commencement Address

RAY VARA, President and CEO of Hawai‘i Pacific Health, will deliver the keynote address at HPU’s 88th commencement ceremony scheduled for Thursday, May 11, at 5 p.m. at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.

At the helm of one of the state’s largest health care providers, Vara’s responsibilities include executive oversight of Hawai‘i Pacific Health’s four medical centers, Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children, Pali Momi Medical Center, Straub Medical Center, and Wilcox Medical Center on Kaua‘i.

Prior to joining Hawai‘i Pacific Health in 2002, Vara was the Chief Executive Officer for Los Alamos Medical Center and earlier was its Chief Financial Officer. From 1988-1998, Vara served as a U.S. Army Officer and held various assignments including Assistant Administrator and Chief Financial Officer for Bassett Army Community Hospital in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the Deputy Chief Financial Officer for Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. He also served with the 9th Infantry Regiment, Fort Lewis, Washington, and Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu.

A Hawai‘i Pacific University alumnus, Vara earned his bachelor’s in business administration degree in 1993. He was presented with the Paul C.T. Loo Distinguished Alumni Award in 2006, acknowledging his outstanding professional achievements and contributions to the community.

A member of the HPU Board of Trustees since 2008, Vara is the Chair of the Compensation Subcommittee and is a member of the Executive Committee and the Finance and Investment Committee. In addition to serving HPU, Vara sits on several local and national boards to include: Director, Bank of Hawaii Corporation; Director, Island Insurance Company, Ltd.; Trustee, Mid-Pacific Institute; Trustee, Blood Bank of Hawaii; and Treasurer of American Heart Association, national.
