HPU, National WWII Museum Partner for Pacific Academy Summer Program

Honolulu, Hawaii — This summer, Hawai‘i Pacific University and the National WWII Museum will partner for a unique educational and cultural experience. Pacific Academy 2016 is a four-week college summer session, beginning June 11, educating participants about World War II. It includes visits to historic sites around Oahu that were directly involved in the war.

"We are pleased to collaborate with the National WWII Museum to offer the Pacific Academy,” said Justin Vance, Ed.D., Interim Dean of HPU’s College of Extended and Interdisciplinary Education. “The museum is a leader in World War II education and with HPU being home to recognized scholars in Asia-Pacific, American and military history, this is a natural fit."

"Our faculty also looks forward to collaborating with other noted scholars, including Allan R. Millett, Ph.D., Ambrose Professor of History at the University of New Orleans, to offer a rich learning experience in a vibrant and historical setting," Vance said.

Through a combination of formal and informal learning, students can earn up to six college credit hours at HPU by taking courses in history, marine science and international relations. The courses will feature visits to historic sites, including Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial, Ford Island, the USS Missouri, and Iolani Palace.

Classes will be held at Aloha Tower Marketplace, revitalized by HPU as a community and educational gathering space. Academy students will have an opportunity to reside at the Waterfront Lofts at Aloha Tower Marketplace, located near historic sites in Downtown Honolulu.

The Pacific Academy is open to new, current and visiting students. Students seeking the full program, which includes accommodations, can visit http://pacific-academy.org or call (504) 528-1944, extension 257.
