About Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China

GDUFS was created by a merger in 1995 of Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages and Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade. GDUFS attaches great importance to a full range of cooperation and exchanges in international education. To date, it has established cooperative ties with more than 190 universities and academic or cultural institutions in 32 countries or regions. In addition, the University has co-established three Confucius Institutes overseas at Sapporo University, Japan, Ural State University, Russia and Universidad Catolica de Santa Maria, Peru.

GDUFS is situated in Guangzhou, a city with a long history and rich cultural legacy and the economic hub in South China. The university boasts three campuses with a total area of 153 hectares. The North Campus, which covers an area of 63 hectares, is located at the northern foot of the Baiyun Mountain; the South Campus, with an area of 73 hectares, is situated in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center; and Dalang Campus, having an area of 17 hectares, lies in Dalang, Baiyun District. The university enjoys fine surroundings featuring green trees, crystal streams, scenic bridges and fresh air.

* Please remember HPU Study Abroad Application Deadline is Mid-March for Fall and Mid-October for Spring. 

Admission Requirements:

  • Must have attended HPU for one semester
  • Must intend to graduate from HPU
  • Must have at least a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be fluent in English
  • Four semesters of College Level Chinese or the equivalent

Application Procedure:

  • Complete the Student Exchange Program data sheet.
  • Schedule and attend a formal interview with Melissa Matsubara
  • Be prepared to discuss your motives for studying abroad and your degree plan.
  • Select an exchange partner university that has courses which can be used for your intended HPU degree.
  • Fill out the exchange university's admissions application: GDUFS Application
  • Obtain recommendation letters to be turned in with your application. (This depends on the individual university application requirements)
  • Passport photos (Amount and size depend upon each university)
  • Sign a Course Request Approval (CRA) to verify your foreign coursework and HPU equivalents.

Health Insurance: Health Insurance is mandatory for all study abroad students. HPU recommends health insurance from Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) for students study abroad. There is more information medical coverage and rates of CISI health insurance at

Housing Accommodations: Guangdong University of Foreign Studies offers on campus housing for international students. Rooms are often shared, equipped with a public bathroom, they are fully furnished. They also have a canteen, a gym, and security on site. The location is in walking distance to the nearest supermarket and five minutes from the main campus. Click on this link to see the campus map.
