HPU Trustees Launch Presidential Search

August 24, 2015

Honolulu, Hawaii — HPUThe Board of Trustees of Hawai‘i Pacific University today announced the commencement of their search for a successor to HPU president Geoffrey Bannister, who earlier announced that he will retire from HPU at the end of June, 2016, when he completes his five-year term of office.

The Presidential Search committee will include members from throughout the university community, including trustees, faculty, staff, and students. It will be chaired by trustee Rear Admiral F.P. “Gus” Gustavson, USN (Ret.).

“I am confident that the members of the committee bring with them a deep understanding of and commitment to Hawai‘i Pacific University,” said Joachim Cox, chair of the HPU Board of Trustees. “Their varied backgrounds will bring perspectives from across our very diverse university community. I believe they are well-suited to help identify the unique individual who will help guide HPU into the future.”

Cox said the search process will be extensive and will seek feedback on both presidential qualifications and possible candidates from the entire campus community. Town hall style meetings beginning at the end of August will allow campus constituents to share their comments and concerns, and a website and online survey will be launched soon to allow members of the community to provide direct input.

“All of us are acutely aware of the challenges we will face in replacing Geoff Bannister,” Gustavson said. “For the future, we are looking for a leader who will carry the university into a new era of defining HPU’s aspirations, expanding its resource base, and fulfilling its promise of academic quality and excellence.”

While the search will be confidential, the process will remain transparent, especially as the position profile is finalized. Gustavson said a confidential search will help the university attract the broadest possible pool of candidates, while providing candidates a greater opportunity to fully consider HPU.
