HONOLULU — Three longtime leaders from Hawai‘i education, finance and development sectors were recently elected to the Hawai‘i Pacific University Board of Trustees, announced Chairman of the Board Joachim Cox. Joining the HPU board are Doris Ching, Ed.D., Howard Kam and Lance Wilhelm. Their terms are scheduled to begin in January.

“We are thrilled to have each of these community leaders join HPU’s Board of Trustees particularly during this transformative time for the university,” said Chairman Cox. “Their combined set of experiences will be instrumental in helping to guide the board and university in the years to come.”

Ching is an experienced educator and Emeritus Vice President for Student Affairs, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. She has served the state of Hawai‘i for more than 42 years as an educator, UH faculty member and leader. Ching was also the first woman of color and first Asian/Pacific Islander elected president of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) and NASPA Foundation. She is now an independent education management professional. Ching currently is chair of the Hawai‘i Judicial Selection Commission and a member of accreditation teams of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).

Kam has served as the managing director for TRUSTA, An Accountancy Corporation, since 1983. He is registered as a certified public accountant in Hawai‘i, Georgia, Oregon and the Territory of Guam. Kam has 35 years of professional accounting experience, which includes work in the areas of audit, tax, strategic planning, due diligence/feasibility studies, governance, human resource studies, mergers/acquisitions, valuation and engagements. He also retired as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve.

Wilhelm serves as chairman of the Kamehameha Schools Board of Trustees. He has many years of experience in local development, construction and project management and recently joined Irongate as its Managing Principal to oversee current and future development operations in Hawai‘i. Irongate is the owner and developer of the Trump International Hotel & Tower at Waikiki Beachwalk and The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Waikiki Beach. Wilhelm previously held the position of Senior Vice President for Hawai‘i Operations at Kiewit Infrastructure West Co.

All three serve on various select boards, volunteer groups and community organizations in the islands.

“Ching, Kam and Wilhelm are among a number community leaders who believe in what we are trying to accomplish at the university,” said HPU President Geoffrey Bannister. “HPU is positioning itself as Hawai‘i’s leading private university with a public purpose, and these new board members will certainly help us fulfill that mission.”
