HONOLULU — Science Pub-Hawai‘i, presented by Hawai‘i Pacific University, looks at how taking care of the local ‘Āina — Hawai‘i’s land — can inform global approaches in areas such as sustainability and climate change. “Aloha ‘Āina: the global potential of local knowledge,” is scheduled May 19 at Gordon Biersch, Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Brenda Jensen, Ph.D., HPU Associate Professor of Biology and Associate Dean of the College of Natural and Computational Sciences, will introduce Trisha Kehaulani Watson, Ph.D., of Honua Consulting.  Dr. Watson will speak about the history of and inspiration for the Aloha ‘Aina concept in Hawai‘i and how it has invigorated a new approach for community-based resource management.

The concept is the core of a new inaugural program between HPU and the Sea Education Association (SEA). Launching later this month, HPU and SEA will jointly offer “Aloha 'Aina: People and Nature in the Hawaiian Islands”, a summer program that blends classroom and hands-on experience for college students aboard SEA’s research vessel, the SSV Robert C. Seamans, as it sails through the Hawaiian Islands. The ship scheduled to be docked at Aloha Tower during Science Pub.

“Students will work with community leaders, ocean resource managers and coastal stakeholders to learn how to preserve Hawai‘i’s lands and waters and innovative solutions in subjects such as land-based pollution, over-fishing, and climate change adaptation,” Jensen said.

Presented by HPU, Science Pub-Hawai‘i is held on the waterfront outdoor stage at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, at 6 p.m. This well-attended informal showcase of research and scholarship is for people who like to learn and discuss timely topics. The event is free, and though no RSVP is required, Science Pub friends are encouraged to let others know they're coming via Facebook, Seats fill briskly so consider arriving early to enjoy Gordon Biersch's acclaimed food and drink.
