HONOLULU — Hawai‘i Pacific University student Travis Aborn attempted a traditional Filipino dance at HPU’s 28th annual Intercultural Day April 20.

Members of the Kababayan Filipino-American Student Association cheered as Aborn worked up a sweat jumping over tinikling sticks at their booth.

“I’ve always wanted to try it,” Aborn said, with a smile.

Intercultural Day offers HPU students the opportunity to share customs and traditions from their home countries. In addition to exhibit booths filled with activities, a colorful parade along downtown Honolulu featured students holding flags and banners from their home countries. Many were dressed in traditional attire.

Dance and musical performances showcased the diversity of the students, who come from nearly 100 countries.

“It’s very positive,” said Aborn. “I think every ethnicity comes together through love and compassion.”

Winners were announced in the performance and exhibit categories:

First Place: Thailand

Second Place: Vietnam

Third Place: The Philippines/Kababayan Filipino-American Student Association

First Place: Saudi Arabia/Saudi Student Club

Second Place: Bangladesh

Third Place: The Philippines/Kababayan Filipino-American Student Association
