Valedictory Speakers

Collins, Kelly J

President Wright, members of the board of trustees, faculty and staff, family and friends, good evening.

I feel blessed this evening to be standing here surrounded by my fellow graduates, and I’m thankful for those who have been so supportive over my past four years here at Hawai‘i Pacific University.

We have had the incredible opportunity to share our lives with each other over the past few years and the lessons that we’ve learned both inside and outside of class through our international relationships have given us all a perspective on life that will enrich our future experiences both individually and as a global community. I personally have learned more about myself, about the world, and about the significance of loving those that God places in my path, regardless of language barriers and cultural differences, than I would have ever imagined possible when I arrived here only four years ago.

Some say that it’s impossible for one person to have a profound impact on the world. I believe that we’ve been given a unique opportunity here at HPU because the world has come to us, and we’ve been able to share our lives with each other in a way that’s edified us daily with compassion and understanding.

It’s my hope and prayer this evening that as we leave this ceremony and continue on our journeys that we would take the lessons and relationships that we’ve gained, work toward the new goals and dreams that we’ve set, and live in every moment sharing the compassion we’ve learned wherever we go.

Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” I believe that we all have something to give, and that in so doing, we can touch lives all over the world simply as we disperse from this ceremony this evening.

Congratulations graduates, God bless, and thank you.
