Despite much of the action played in front of their net, the Sea Warriors did not break, and kept the lead at 1-0 until the 86th minute. Following confusion between Ellman and her back line, Daniela Ramirez ran on to a loose ball and slotted home the second goal of the match.

HPU failed to convert on two penalty kicks, as the Sea Warriors drop to 1-3 while the Swords improve to 1-1. The match between the two PacWest foes was played as a non-conference affair.
HPU were hoping to take the fight early to Chaminade, having defeated them in their previous four meetings. The Sea Warriors soon found themselves in a dogfight, as Chaminade opened the scoring in the first half on a goal by Kuulelani Agbayani. After a scramble in front of the HPU net, Agbayani slotted the ball past HPU keeper Chelsie Sato for the early lead. Sato replaced Veronica Ellman who suffered a foot injury versus Sonoma State.
The lead held until the 62nd minute when Nicole Bleidistel leveled the score. Bleidistel redirected a Caitlyn McNeely service from the left flank, beating Sword keeper Marisa Minor to the far post.
The intensity and physical play escalated at that point. A total of four cautions were given in the following 15 minutes, including Kelsey Mesmer (CUH) who was sent off after receiving her second yellow card. HPU made a push in the game's final 13 minutes to capitalize on the man advantage, but saw regulation end with a draw and the game head into overtime. The Sea Warriors were clearly outclassed on the day, posting just four shots to the Seawolves’ 31. Chelsie Sato moved from the back into goal for the rest of the match, allowing five goals with 13 saves.

HPU gathered themselves though, bending but not breaking until SSU grabbed their second goal in the 35th minute. They posted their third goal just moments later as Alexica Bosque dribbled through the Sea Warrior defense for her second goal of the match.

Men’s And Women’s Soccer Battle In Season Finales
Kaneohe, Hawai‘i (11/2/07) – On a sunny day at Atherton Field, HPU battled Grand Canyon University in a men’s and women’s season finale double-header. The Lady Sea Warriors fell 2-0, with the men drawing 1-1 after two overtime sessions. The HPU women finish the season 3-15 (2-10) with the men closing at 6-9-1 (4-5-1).
The women’s game saw domination by the Lady ‘Lopes for most of the match. HPU did have their chances, testing GCU keeper Ruth Nsubuga on several occasions. In the 34th minute, GCU scored to take a 1-0 lead on a ball shot by Vanessa Young over the outstretched arm of HPU keeper Veronica Ellman. Ellman finished the match with five saves.
GCU added to their lead in the 62nd minute, as Lindsay Countryman laid a nice pass to Young who put the ball away for her second goal of the match and a 2-0 lead. Kayleigh Paulin led the attack for the Sea Warriors in firing two shots on net.
The men’s match featured the upstart Sea Warriors against a Grand Canyon team who held a 9-0 conference record and had already won the PacWest Championship. After losing to the Antelopes in Phoenix early this season, HPU were looking for revenge and redemption. The first half featured much possession by both teams but no serious chances on goal. GCU and HPU entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, GCU scored the first goal of the match. Albert Escovar put in a rebound off a Mike King save for the 1-0 lead. HPU wasted no time in responding with a goal of their own. Less than four minutes later, Mike Decaires slipped a pass into Akihide Adachi off the side of the penalty area, who flicked the ball to Jim Terry who had raced in from the right flank. Terry lifted the shot over the hand off GCU keeper Vincent Licciardi to tie the score at 1-1.
The matched carried on through the half, the first overtime, then the second overtime session, and appeared to be headed toward a sure draw – but then controversy ensued. Grand Canyon were awarded a penalty kick in the final seconds of the match as the HPU bench erupted in disgust.
Some might say all things happen for a reason, and Mike King promptly turned away the penalty kick with a brilliant save on a shot hit low to the left post. After the ball was cleared off the line the referee blew his whistle for full-time.
After the match, seniors Akihide Adachi, Mike King, Josh Dworsky, Thimo Langner, Preston Sims, Toni Bakken, Gabe Sugar, and Devin Loughlin were all honored for their contributions to the Sea Warrior Men’s Soccer program.
HPU Falls To Dixie State
Kaneohe, Hawai‘i (10/31/07) – On a rainsoaked afternoon at the Windward Campus of Hawaii Pacific University, the Lady Sea Warrior soccer team dropped their second match of the season to Dixie State College, 2-0. HPU drops to 3-14 overall and 2-9 in the PacWest, while Dixie State maintains their place at the top of the conference at 15-3-1 (9-1-1).
Early in the match, HPU showed Dixie State they were not the same team that lost 5-0 in their previous meeting. HPU moved the ball well but were unable to create any serious scoring chances. The Lady Rebels took the lead in the 31st minute as Wendy Stratford scored off a through ball from Shannon Larsen for the 1-0 lead.
Dixie State scored once more in the 58th minute as Larsen again laid a nice through ball, this time to Lataya Shaffer, who slotted the shot past Sea Warrior keeper Veronica Ellman for a 2-0 advantage. Ellman posted nine saves on the afternoon.
HPU joins the men’s team in a season finale doubleheader this Friday, November 2nd at Atherton Field. Both teams host Grand Canyon University with the men’s team kicking off at 1:00 p.m. followed by the Lady Sea Warriors at 3:00 p.m.
HPU Sweep Season Series With Swords
Honolulu, Hawai‘i (10/25/07) – At Saint Louis Field on the campus of Chaminade University, HPU swept a PacWest men’s and women’s doubleheader over the Silverswords. The Lady Sea Warriors improved to 3-12 (2-7) with a 2-0 win, and the men’s team rose to 6-8 (4-4) after winning 5-0.
In their second and final meeting of the season, HPU topped the Lady Swords with two second half goals. Jaqueline Diaz-Sua assisted on the first goal and put the game out of reach with her own score for the 2-0 win.
Ashley Dolan reeked havoc on the Chaminade defense all match, tallying four shots with three on net. She finally broke through in the 62nd minute when she put the ball away for a 1-0 lead. Diaz-Sua sealed the victory in the 90th minute with an unassisted goal.
The Lady Sea Warriors join the men’s team this Saturday, October 27th, in another PacWest doubleheader. Match time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Hawai‘i Loa Campus.
Double Whammy, HPU Soccer Teams Fall To Seasiders
Laie, Hawai‘i (10/23/07) – On the campus of BYU-Hawai‘i the Sea Warrior men’s and women’s soccer teams fell to the Seasiders, both by 4-1 scores. The Lady Sea Warriors fall to 2-12 (1-7) while the men’s team continues their conference slide, dropping their fourth consecutive conference match to fall to 5-8 (3-4).
The HPU women, seeking their second conference win of the season, held themselves together through much of the first half. The Seasiders opened the scoring in the 22nd minute on a goal by Jill Haar (2G, 1A). That appeared to be the only goal of the first half until Sarah Welty pushed the lead to 2-0 with a goal in the 41st minute.
HPU entered the second half within striking distance, but any hopes of a comeback were dashed after two early BYUH goals. Sarah Welty tallied her second goal on a put-back off a Veronica Ellman save (3 saves). Just 22 seconds later, Jill Haar scored to increase to a 4-0 lead, putting the game out of reach.
In the 50th minute, Chelsie Sato scored off a free kick for the only Sea Warrior goal of the match. Sato was active on the ball, recording three shots, two on net.
Both HPU teams look to get back on track this Thursday, October 25, as they take on Chaminade at Saint Louis Field. Match times are set for 12:00 p.m. for the men, and 10:00 p.m. for the women.
Lady Sea Warriors Fall to UH-Hilo
Keaau, Hawai‘i (10/21/07) – In the second half of a PacWest soccer doubleheader, the HPU Lady Sea Warrior soccer team fell to conference power UH-Hilo, 1-0. The Sea Warriors drop to 2-11 (1-6) while the Lady Vulcans improve to 9-6 (6-1).
For the second time this season, HPU gave UH-Hilo all they could handle. On a September 22 matchup, the Sea Warriors fell to UH-Hilo in overtime, and today the Vulcans needed to convert a penalty kick in the 80th minute to escape with a win. At the 79:23 mark, Kristen Grant drove home a penalty kick for the only score of the match.
HPU was on the defensive for most of the match. Veronica Ellman (8 saves) was, again, under heavy fire but came up with timely saves to keep HPU in the match. Tati Tibbitts tallied the only two Sea Warrior shots on the afternoon.
HPU retakes the field this Tuesday, October 23 for another conference match, as they take on BYU-Hawai‘i in Laie, Hawai‘i. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
Double Trouble, HPU Drops Two To Argos
Belmont, California (10/14/07) – On the campus of Notre Dame de Namur, both HPU soccer teams took the field for a conference matchup with Notre Dame de Namur. The HPU men fell 3-2 and the Lady Sea Warriors came up short, 4-1.
On the men’s side, HPU was seeking their first conference road win in two seasons. They looked prime to do just that, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime. Andre Whitt put HPU on the scoresheet in the 20th minute for a 1-0 lead. Not two minutes later, Argo keeper Rafael Vaquerano knocked down an Adam Rieke strike that was followed up by Akihide Adachi for a 2-0 lead. NDNU scored the match’s third goal in just over a two minute span to cut the Sea Warrior lead 2-1.
In the second half, NDNU drew level as they were awarded a penalty kick that Edgar Riverea promptly put home. With the game appearing to be headed to overtime, NDNU attacker Andres Caballero dribbled through the HPU defense and slipped a shot past Matt Terry (5 saves) for the game winner.
With the loss HPU drops to 4-6 and 3-2 in the PacWest. The Argos improved to 6-7-1 and 3-3 in conference.
On the ladies side, NDNU scored two goals in each half for the 4-1 win. With the Lady Sea Warriors down 2-0 after a rebound header goal by Amy Armijo (NDNU), HPU scored their first away goal of the season. In the 54th minute, Jamie Hirai slipped a ball through to newly acquired Elysia Sarrett-Pilgrim, who shot it past Argo keeper Christina Dito. The goal cut the NDNU lead to 2-1, giving the Sea Warriors new life.
The Argos grabbed the momentum right back in the 61st minute on a Catherine Ponce header off a corner kick, and sealed the victory less than 10 minutes later. Ponce again took a service and put the ball in the back of the net to complete the scoring.
HPU drops to 2-10 (1-5) and NDNU improves to 4-8-1 (3-4).
The Lady Sea Warriors return home and will continue conference play next Sunday, October 21 at UH-Hilo. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. The men close their road trip tomorrow in Seaside, California as they take on Cal State Monterey Bay. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.

On the women’s side, HPU fell to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in conference. The Antelopes scored their first of two goals in the sixth minute. Keely Cisneros drove home a corner kick service from Angelina Massagli for the 1-0 lead Lindsey Countryman scored in the 33rd minute to complete the scoring. Despite the close scoreline, GCU dominted the match from the start in posting 26 shots to HPU’s two. HPU keeper Veronica Ellman posted 11 saves on the afternoon.
On the men’s side, the Sea Warriors’ unblemished PacWest record came to an end. With the loss, HPU falls to 3-1 in conference and remains in second place behind undefeated Grand Canyon. The Sea Warriors fell to 4-5 overall. In a very evenly contested battle, HPU took a 1-0 lead into halftime on the heels of freshman striker Adam Rieke’s fifth goal of the season.
GCU answered back in the second frame, knocking home two restart goals for the victory. Bosko Jovicevic scored on a free kick to tie the match, and then on a penalty kick that was awarded in the 75th minute for the game winner. HPU keeper Matt Terry posted two saves for the match.

In the 35th minute, WWU were awarded a corner kick, and Zach Bauking promptly served a ball to the head of Gibson Bardley who sent it home for the 1-0 lead.
The second half featured a more even match. Each team had three chances on goal with the Vikings capitalizing on one of them. Matt Pele stole a ball and slipped it behind the backline to a running Keith Ferris. Ferris slotted the ball past Terry for the breakaway goal and the 2-0 lead.
Jim Terry provided most of the attack for the Sea Warriors, posting two shots on goal from the outside half.
HPU plays their first PacWest road match tomorrow, October 12, when they take on host Grand Canyon University. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Trailing or tied most of the match, HPU scored in the 87th minute for the thrilling win. HPU improves to 1-4 while Northwood falls to 2-4-1.
With such a young team, HPU came of age by showing resiliency and maturity in coming back from two deficits during the match. The Lady Sea Warriors jumped on the scoreboard first, as Vailama Walker took a pass from Lauren Avenue and drove it past Northwood goalkeeper Stephanie Jung. Northwood responded by taking a 2-1 lead before halftime. Alysia Kroger scored both goals to put the Knights on top.
The seesaw battle would then begin. Ashley Dolan found the back of the net in the 52nd minute to draw the Sea Warriors level at 2-2. Northwood answered back in the 71st minute, as Kailyn Train followed up a scramble in front of the goal to put Northwood up 3-2. Northwood would hit the back of the net no more, but instead saw HPU score twice in the final seven minutes to cap a thrilling comeback victory. Flank midfielder Jamie Hirai scored to bring the Sea Warriors level once again at 3-3, and Vailama Walker sealed the win with her second goal of the match with just minutes to play.
The Lady Sea Warriors return to action Saturday, September 22 to host UH-Hilo in the first PacWest Conference match of the season. The game will be played at Waipio Peninsula Park with the kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.

In the second half, ERAU would put the game out of reach, pushing two shots past Ellman to take a 4-0 lead in the 79th minute. The match also marked the final home appearance for seniors Rachele Bakic, Lauren Dignam, Kerianne Pascua, Tina Stoum, Cynthia Botello, Audrey Haerle, and Malia Kane. After participating at the club level the past four seasons, most of them were happy for the opportunity to compete at the intercollegiate level in their final year. "I'm definitely happy we got to experience the NCAA competition," said Kane. "Although our record isn't what we'd like it to be, we have a lot of talented young players who will lay a solid foundation for years to come."

Sea Warriors Fall In Double Overtime
BYU-Hawai'i's Kristi Astin knocked in a rebound goal with two minutes remaining in double overtime, giving the visiting Seasiders a 2-1 decision over the Sea Warrior women's soccer team at Atherton Field in Kaneohe.
In a match resembling last weekend's 1-0 win by the Seasiders, defense again dominated play, as neither team got much going offensively. BYUH outshot the Sea Warriors, 30-6, but HPU goalkeeper Melissa Naeole showed why she is one of the conference's top goalies, finishing with 16 saves.
BYUH drew first blood in the 21st minute, as Emily Mearns shot was initially stopped then bobbled by Naeole. Officials ruled the ball crossed the net line, giving the Seasiders the early lead. The Sea Warriors answered in the 41st minute, as Lauren Dignam was in the right place at the right time, battling for a ball off a blocked shot and deflecting it into the net to tie the score going into halftime.
In the second period the HPU defense tightened, despite playing on their side of the field for most of the half. Naeole was spectacular, and was aided by great hustle plays from her teammates in the field. Neither team was able to score, sending the match to overtime. In the first overtime, defense again dominated, sending it to a second and final extra period. HPU Adds Sports For New Pacific West Conference
Hawai’i Pacific University, along with the three other Division II schools in Hawai‘i, welcome Notre Dame de Namur University and Grand Canyon University to the Pacific West Conference beginning in fall of 2006. With the departure of Montana State-Billings University and Western New Mexico University last year, the four Hawai‘i schools played this past season as “independents”, receiving a waiver from the NCAA to keep the conference in name, while searching for new members. In order to be eligible for conference membership in the NCAA, a conference must consist of a minimum of six member institutions who sponsor at least ten sports, with two team sports for each gender.
To comply with conference membership regulations, HPU, along with Chaminade University, Brigham Young University Hawai‘i, and the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, will add women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s soccer to their athletics programs. The ten sports HPU will now sponsor on the championship level will be men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s golf, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, and softball. Men’s tennis and baseball will remain sponsored sports at HPU, but will compete as independents.
“We are excited to have new members within the conference, while maintaining the friendships and rivalries created with the four Hawai‘i institutions,” said athletics director Jill Ward. “The addition of the three sports will make us more compatible with other institutions on the mainland, and help further expansion. In addition, the new sports will create more opportunities for local high school student-athletes to participate at home. We hope to see increased community support for these teams and our currently sponsored teams as well.”
A waiver has been sent to the NCAA by the institutions requesting full conference status beginning this fall. Benefits of a conference include automatic qualifiers for postseason play, national recognition, conference grant money, and stability in recruiting and scheduling efforts.
