Chris Fisher To Take Over Reigns for Men's Soccer

Honolulu (12/31/09) - Chris Fisher has been appointed the new HPU men’s soccer coach. Fisher will take over for Scott Liedtke who resigned after seven years with the Sea Warriors. “I am very excited for the opportunity to lead HPU men's soccer into the next decade,” said Fisher.  “The program continues to grow and get stronger every year and I hope to keep this tradition going.”

Fisher takes over head coaching duties after three years as the HPU Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach. The Sea Warriors went 30-16-5 during that time, and finished second in the Pacific West Conference the last two seasons.

“We feel fortunate to have Chris lead our men’s soccer program,” said Darren Vorderbruegge, HPU Athletics Director. “Our hope is that he will provide continuity and continue the recent success of the program as we strive to win a conference championship.”

Michele Nagamine, who recently finished her second season with the HPU women’s soccer team, is looking forward to working with Fisher. “I am so happy to be working with Chris. He was an integral part of building our men's program into a PacWest contender and has the support of the players and coaches. Chris understands our culture here at HPU and is well respected in the soccer community. I look forward to writing the next chapter of HPU soccer with him.”

Originally from Pleasanton, California, Fisher graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he played four seasons for the men’s soccer team. Fisher then took his game to the professional ranks, playing at FC Borge Pyronis in France, and with the California Jaguars and Chico Rooks of the United Soccer League. He later finished his career with the Hawai‘i Tsunami in the USISL Pro League. Most recently Fisher coached at Vaiete Soccer Club and Riggers Soccer Club in Hawai‘i.

Scott Liedtke Steps Down as HPU Men’s Soccer Coach

After seven years with the HPU Men’s Soccer program, Scott Liedtke is stepping down as Head Coach. After four years as assistant coach, Liedtke was elevated to Head Coach in 2007 where he led HPU for three years.

“We are very pleased with what Scott has done with the HPU men’s soccer program,” said HPU Athletics Director Darren Vorderbruegge. “Having both played and coached at HPU, he is and always will be part of the HPU family. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Since taking over HPU in 2007, Liedtke has taken the program to new heights. He posted over 10 wins in each of the last two seasons, and finished one game shy this past season of HPU’s first PacWest Title. He departs with an overall record of 30-16-4 in three seasons.

Liedtke cites his increasing commitment to Le Jardin Academy, where he works as a college counselor, as the reason for his departure. “It was just getting very difficult to balance my commitment to Le Jardin and HPU,” said Liedtke. “Whether it has been as a player, supporter, or coach I have been affiliated with the HPU men’s soccer program for 17 years, and HPU will always be important to me.”

Liedtke was a member of the 1996 HPU team that finished with a 17-2-1 record, best in school history. He also played for the Hawai‘i Tsunami from 1997-1998, and has been coaching at the club and high school level for 21 years.

“I have been a part of HPU soccer for a long time and had the pleasure to work and play with a lot of quality players,” adds Liedtke. “I want to thank HPU for believing in my abilities as a coach, and giving me the opportunity to represent Hawaii Pacific University.”

HPU Men’s Soccer Close Season With Title On The Line

Ekden, a junior from Lidkoping, Sweden, also returns after being selected to the All-PacWest First-Team last season. He scored four goals and assisted on four more. Ekden was also a 2007 PacWest Newcomer of the Year selection.
