HPU Offers NEW Master’s Degree in Elementary Education!

The Master of Education in Secondary Education (M.Ed.) develops professional educators who are reflective practitioners dedicated to the scholarship of teaching and school renewal. The program is based on an innovative, standards-driven, field-based curriculum that employs cutting-edge educational technology to integrate content and pedagogy. Employing a digital portfolio-based assessment system, university faculty and mentor teachers will guide the candidate's progress in achieving professional standards and proficiencies.

Hawaii Pacific University's Teacher Education Program will prepare candidates to become competent, professional educators through classroom discussions and field experiences. Teacher candidates will learn in small classes and will enjoy individual attention by university faculty and mentor teachers. Graduates will become part of an alumni 'ohana (family) that will provide continuing mentoring and support to new teachers.

The program prepares individuals for licensure in Hawai'i and 44 other states in six content areas:

  • Computer Science
  • English
  • English as a Second Language
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Please click here for a list of the 44 states with which Hawai'i has a reciprocal licensing agreement. To add a field to a current Hawaii teaching license, please click here for instructions and to download the application form.

A student may pursue a Master of Education in Secondary Education degree, or a Professional Certificate in Secondary Education. Both options will prepare candidates for licensure. It is possible for the student to obtain a license before completing the master's degree. Three additional courses beyond the professional certificate are required to earn the master's degree.

The HPU Teacher Education program features:

  • Convenient evening and weekend course offerings
  • Small class size
  • Professional certificate in secondary education
  • M.Ed. in Secondary Education option
  • Field experiences to accompany every course
  • Web-based courses and digital portfolios
