Organizational change and development knowledge is important to leaders of governments, communities, and corporations in every nation around the world. In fact, few persons in our contemporary global community can avoid having to deal with constant changes in technology, environments, governments, businesses, communications, neighborhoods, workplaces, economies, and social institutions.

The Professional Certificate in Organizational Change and Development is offered as a campus-based and distance learning, online program. Students who choose to enroll in this certificate program learn cutting edge theories and methods for being a change leader, while being grounded in a globally-relevant perspective by highly qualified faculty. Our distance learning approach is based on multiple teaching methods including online discussions, conference calls, and other means that ensure the interactive advantages of traditional education remain part in the learning experience.

Reasons to pursue the PCOCD:

Our students are primarily persons who recognize that knowledge about change and development is important for their current and future professional careers. Students complete our on line certificate for the following reasons:

To complement another program of studies:
Students have completed the PCOCD while also completing graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines such as Management Information Systems, Human Resources, Management, Sociology and Anthropology, Global Leadership, Communications, Public Administration, and the MBA.

As the foundation and initial step toward completion of a Masters in Organizational Change (MAOC):
Some of our students complete the PCOCD first, and then decide to continue their studies for a Master of Arts in Organizational Change at HPU.

To reduce the in-residence requirement for the MAOC:
By completing the distance PCOCD, as well as other required Master of Arts in Organizational Change courses in a non-resident status, a student may complete a significant portion of the requirements for an MAOC degree without residing in Hawaii. Those students are still required to spend some time studying in residence at HPU in Hawaii, but that time is significantly reduced to just one or two semesters. Normally it takes a student four semesters in residence at HPU in Hawaii to complete the MAOC.

As a means of professional development:
Individuals may complete the PCOCD to enhance and further develop their job and professional skills. The content of the courses in the program can be helpful to working adults who wish to expand their knowledge without taking an advanced degree.

For organizational and staff development:
In partnership with Hawaii, national, and international corporations, Hawaii Pacific University has offered the PCOCD as in-house professional development for their managers and staff. In these cases, a cohort group is organized and the program of studies is tailored specifically for the needs of that organization.

To work toward a PhD in the change and development field:
Our courses and program are recognized by several universities who provide PhD programs in the change and development field. HPU has cooperative alliances with two of these programs. These alliances assist our graduates with advantages in credits transfers, acceptance to PhD programs, and other advantages.

Students completing HPU's master's or certificate program will be prepared to:

  • Understand and apply appropriate theories and methods for organizational change;
  • Develop broad, globally appropriate perspectives necessary for analyzing organizations in transition;
  • Integrate technology, diversity, and strategy into management applications;
  • Relate the change process to various national and community business settings;
  • Use contemporary organizational change techniques in a variety of cross-cultural and societal settings;
  • Understand the variety of contemporary change models for creating organizational improvements and successful adaptation to contemporary challenges in business and government.
