Peter Britos.jpgHPU Professor Peter Britos was selected as a 2009 FINE Fellow at Carnegie Mellon University.  As a FINE Fellow he flew to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to participate in a series of GIGAPAN technology and creation workshops.

Dr. Britos first collaborated on GIGAPAN imagery as a Curator and Gallery Director of the Hawai'i State Art Museum.  He continued working with gigapixel photography as Head of the HPU Multimedia Program, incorporating the capturing devices and its metadata capabilities into the University's multimedia curricula.

As a FINE Fellow, Dr. Britos joined an eclectic group of scientists and professional photographers who experimented onsite at Carnegie Mellon with panoramic photography.  As part of their fellowship, FINE Fellows took home a full robotics and photography kit to continue their photographic experimentations.

Said Dr. Britos, "one of the best parts of the FINE Fellow workshops was the collaboration and sharing of ideas with other scientists and artists.  The workshops were a wornderful opportunity for me to reach across to individuals in hard sciences and hard-core photography, and to bring new tools and perspectives to my work."

The FINE Fellows are required to take at least 12 panoramic photographs over the course of the next year and upload them to the GIGAPAN website as part of the Global Connection Project.

"Global Connection is a joint project of Carnegie Mellon University, NASA, Google, and National Geographic. The project's long-term goal is to help us learn about and meet our neighbors across this globe, and learn about our planet itself.

The team is motivated by the desire to encourage global citizenship and understanding by connecting people, places and events through the utilization, exploration and sharing of dynamically viewable images."

GigaPan was developed by Carnegie Mellon University in collaboration with NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group, with support from Google.
