What's Happening at Hawai'i Pacific University

Psychology Student, Jaclyn Petrus

Jaclyn M. Petrus (Magna Cum Laude, B.A. 2007)  Ms. Petrus was selected to be the undergraduate Valedictory speaker at the Winter, 2008 commencement.  A graduate of Punahou High School, Jaclyn  is using her bachelor’s degree as a stepping stone to a master’s degree. “I hope to become a clinical psychologist, although I would also love to teach at the university level.”

Jaclyn started college on the East Coast, but returned to the islands after deciding she wanted to be closer to home. She transferred to HPU and became active in various mental health organizations.  She proved that she is able to handle a full plate – earning a 3.94 cumulative grade point average and a 4.0 in her major while volunteering at Hawai‘i State Hospital, serving as president of the Psi Chi psychology honor society, and authoring a handbook on eating disorders.

“I would recommend HPU because it is very hard to get lost in the crowd, as could happen in larger universities,” she said. “The professors are extremely invested in each student’s education and success.”

(left to right) HPU’s Spring 2008 Global Citizenship Student Symposium tackled climate change and featured panelists Stuart Scott, founder of Energy Associates and creator of Climate Corps; Jeff Mikulina, Sierra Club Hawai‘i Chapter director; HPU Global Leadership and Sustainable Development graduate student Deva Gatica; and HPU Assistant Professor of Environmental Science Dr. Susan Carstenn.

In conjunction with the HPU-hosted lecture by Nobel laureate Dr. Stephen Schneider, HPU’s faculty and students gathered for the Spring 2008 Global Citizenship Student Symposium, “Climate Change andHawai‘i: How Should Higher Education Prepare Students for Tomorrow’s Challenges?”

Moderated by HPU Global Leadership and Sustainable Development (GLSD) Program Chair and Professor Dr. Arthur Whatley, the symposium featured a panel of four local leaders: HPU Assistant Professor of Environmental Science Dr. Susan Carstenn; HPU GLSD graduate student Deva Gatica; Jeff Mikulina, Sierra Club Hawai‘i Chapter director; and Stuart Scott, founder of Energy Associates and creator of Climate Corps (www.climatecorps.org).

Each panelist put on a short presentation outlining his/her background and issues s/he can address. The presentations were followed by a group discussion and question-and-answer session.
“No country on Earth will be exempt,” said Scott. “We are all part of the problem, so we are all part of the solution.”

Carstenn noted that the HPU community is joining together in discussing this important and controversial topic. “A university is a community that should be setting an example,” she said.
