HPU Tennis: The Mark of a Champion
A sports dynasty can be defined as a team that dominates their sport or league for multiple seasons or years. Many dynasties have come and gone, but HPU tennis currently features not one, but two. Having advanced to the NCAA national quarterfinals in each of the past three seasons, the Sea Warriors can stake claim to such a title.
This season, the men’s tennis team climbed as high as sixth in the ITA national poll. They advanced to the national semifinals and closed the season with a third place finish.
“The guys held themselves to such a high standard, so losing in the semifinals was very disappointing to them,” said Head Coach Stefan Pampulov. “What I’m really proud of is that they gave their best shot. It was a total team effort, and I know they’ll be able to reflect positively on the season.”
Senior Hendrik Bode commented on his experience of playing in the National Championships. “The national tournament gave us a much different feeling than any other match. It's more intense and more emotional, and there aren’t many times we’ll get that in our college careers. It’s sad that we couldn’t win it all, but I learned a lot the past four years, and can't thank my coaches and teammates enough for giving me this experience.”
The Lady Sea Warriors’ road to the National Championships went through La Holla, California. They were on the road for their regional playoff match, taking on UC-San Diego in what Pampulov felt was a hostile environment.
“None of us were happy about having to play on the road,” said Pampulov. “UCSD had great fan support, and despite being down after doubles, the ladies’ focus and their determination pulled them through.”
The momentum carried them through to the National Championships, where they blanked Montana State-Billings, 5-0. But a trip to the semifinals was not to be, as they fell to Valdosta State. “It was a very tough loss, but every year we work harder and the ladies know what they have to do to get better as individuals and as a team,” added Pampulov.
“We won some big matches this season even though we had a lot of injuries,” said senior Anastasiya Ageychik. “We were happy with how we played, but also felt we could have done more. But despite a lot of players being out during the season, we were able to put it all together and get to the National Tournament again.”
Not only has each excelled as a team, but they continually feature some of the best players in the nation. On the men’s side, Bode has been nationally ranked throughout his HPU career, and Nikola Petrov has burst on to the scene in an equally impressive fashion. For the ladies, Zora Vlckova was consistently ranked in the nation’s Top 20 in her first season. Nina Mihova, whose name repeatedly appears in the national rankings, has become a dominant player for the Sea Warriors.
“The HPU Athletic Department is extremely proud of Coach Pampulov and the tennis teams,” praised Athletics Director Darren Vorderbruegge. “We were one of only two schools that had both the men’s and women’s teams go as far in the national tournament as they did. Stefan has done an excellent job in developing such a fine program.”
HPU now looks forward to 2010, when they hope to turn their dynasty into not one of just dominance, but of championships.

With the collegiate tennis circuit in full swing, and the NCAA season looming, the HPU tennis team will be eying the National Tournament once again.
Leading the charge on the men’s side will be the West Region’s top player Hendrik Bode.
Head Coach Stefan Pampulov has seen Hendrik blossom as a player, and sat down with Sports Information Director John Barry to comment on the success and future opportunities of his senior star.
JB: How has he impacted your program since he’s been here?
SP: He is the type of person who leads by example. Hendrik is a great team player. On the court he lets his racquet talk. His perfect 2006 record in singles at the number one position was an inspiration to the rest of his teammates. With him at the top spot we were able to climb the national rankings, twice reach the quarterfinals at the NCAA championship and dominate the West region. Hendrik was ranked #1 in the west region and top 10 in the country.
JB: He has become one of the best players in the region and even nationally. What do you attribute this growth to?
SP: He has a complete game and can adapt to any player and any style much better than most
of the players in Division II. He is constantly striving to improve and works on every aspect of the game.
JB: What expectations do you have for him in his senior year?
SP: I am pretty sure he would like to make an even bigger impact during his last season. We have been talking for awhile that we want to have another shot at the national title, and getting there is definitely a priority. I hope that he will be able to finish the season as the best singles player in the country.
JB: What type of success do you feel he will have after college?
SP: College tennis is a great preparation for real life. You always need to be prepared, focused and determined, but most importantly flexible. You need to adjust to different opponents and playing conditions. If he keeps going the way he has been working in practice and playing matches for HPU, then his future is limitless.

HPU Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams Fall In National Quarterfinals
Houston, TX (5/15/08) – The Hawai‘i Pacific University men’s and women’s tennis teams fell in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II National Championships today. The men’s team dropped a tight contest to West Florida 5-4, and the Lady Sea Warriors fell handedly to Valdosta State, 5-0.
The Lady Sea Warriors’ match with the Lady Blazers was the first match of the morning. After quickly dropping all three doubles matches, HPU took the court for singles, where they experienced a two hour rain delay after playing only three games in the first set.
Unfortunately for the Sea Warriors, the rains did not dampen the momentum of the fourth-ranked Lady Blazers, as they captured fifth and sixth singles. Tinka Mihova fell 7-5, 6-3 and Lauren Shin lost 6-0, 6-2 respectively for the final points.
The men took on #3 University of West Florida. Though facing a daunting task, the Sea Warriors were clearly up for the challenge. In doubles, Anton Samuilau and Mark Mestan dropped the first match 8-3, but were picked up by third doubles teammates, Hendrik Bode and Jan Hroch who broke serve for the final point to win 8-6.
Tied at 1-1, both teams turned their attention to the second court, where Nikola Petrov and Daniel Luedi were in a tiebreak. After saving two match points, and squandering three of their own, Luedi and Petrov came up with the win, securing the tiebreak 11-9.
Throughout singles, the match was tight with the Argonauts unwilling to go away. First singles player, Bode, was the first off the court, losing his match 6-3, 6-2. Tied at 2-2, Samuilau, pulled off a convincing win at fifth singles 6-2, 6-2 to put the Sea Warriors up 3-2. Samuilau was followed by second singles player, Luedi. The Swiss native had been virtually unstoppable all season, but dropped a three-set match to even matters at 3-3. After losing the first set in a close tie-break, Mestan easily won the second and third sets 6-1, 6-2 at number three singles for the Sea Warriors to take the lead 4-3.
Petrov and Hroch at fourth and sixth singles were the last two on the court, both exchanging games back and forth in the third set. Hroch would finish first, dropping his match 6-4 in the third. Fourth singles became the deciding match with West Florida’s Luis Arboleda serving at 5-4. Petrov was able to save two match points and take the advantage three times in the game, but, ultimately, was unable to break Arboleda’s big serve.
HPU’s loss to West Florida was the first at the hands of a non-Division I opponent this season.
The exit from the National Tournament quarterfinals marks the second in as many seasons for both teams. The Lady Sea Warriors close the season 22-8, with the men’s team finishing at 20-2.
Prior to the tournament, Coach Stefan Pampulov was named the ITA West Region Coach of the Year, with Ingrid Cseh and Daniel Luedi named as the West Region Players to Watch.

Hawaii Pacific University Tennis Teams Serve The Community
What do you get when you put together collegiate tennis players from around the world and elementary school kids from around the block with some tennis rackets, foam balls and caution tape on a playground? The USTA AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM! This high-quality, free program provides children an opportunity to learn tennis, social and life skills during the time of the day that they are vulnerable to become involved in delinquency.
In the case of the Enchanted Lake Elementary TENNIS After School Program and Hawaii Pacific University Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams, everyone benefits. Twice a week, 32 children experience play-based learning led by Lauren Conching, HPU Assistant Tennis Coach and three additional collegiate player-coaches, on six mini-tennis courts set up on the basketball court of the local park next to the school. Parents are pleased to know that their children learn tennis, social and life skills through a supervised fun activity and play time with friends. The college players benefit too, while playing the roles of teacher and mentor, they take a giant step into the local community and end up going through a unique team bonding process. The program is six weeks long and ends Thursday, March 8, 2007.
“This is not just any after school program,” says Leilani Magee United States Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific Section Director of Community Development. “Enchanted Lake Elementary Parent Teacher Association was aggressively seeking for more after school activities to offer their children and HPU’s Head Coach, Stefan Pampulov, is motivated to invest his college players into the community.” As a result, the students of Enchanted Lake Elementary School have a new friendship with top international collegiate tennis players in Hawaii.
The outcome of such a multi-dimensional partnership is high quality free After School programming for public elementary school children at the most critical time of the day. The prime hours when children are most vulnerable to become involved in gangs, drugs, teenage pregnancy and other forms of delinquency are generally between 3pm and 6pm, basic after school hours. USTA TENNIS AFTER SCHOOL programs are designed to meet the needs of the community and to make the most of the resources we have within us and within our neighborhoods.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA), HPU Tennis, Kama’aina Kids, Enchanted Lake Elementary School, the ELES Parent Teacher Association, the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs are all of the partners that have come together to make the USTA TENNIS AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM work. These alliances have leveraged each others strengths to make it a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Tennis Teams "Set" For 2006
In his first season as Head Men's and Women's Tennis coach, Stefan Pampulov has one goal in mind. "We definitely want to get to the post season," he said. "I realize it's going to be difficult, but both teams do have the talent to accomplish this."
With virtually a new team on both sides, Pampulov will count on the returning players to help bring the team together. The women's team returns two players, while the men just one scholarship player from last season. So far, practices have been going well, and the teams have slowly become a close knit group. "They all realize that they have to step up and compete for the top spots, but there is a sense of comraderie amongst them."
The teams will be challenged this year with a competitive schedule, including the University of Oklahoma, University of Nebraska, New Mexico State, Butler University, and the University of Hawai'i, all Division I opponents. Along with the competitive Hawai'i schools (BYUH, UH-Hilo, and Chaminade), UC-Davis, Sonoma State, Westmont, Armstrong Atlantic, and Claremont Mudd-Scripps will also travel to Hawai'i to take on the Sea Warriors. Both teams will take one road trip to California for matches at UC-San Diego and Cal-Poly Pomona. "It's a very challenging schedule, but at the same time it's good for the team so they can measure themselves with some of the best teams in the country. Hopefully it'll prepare us should we reach our goal, which is the post season."

Stefan Pampulov Named Head Coach
Hawai'i Pacific University alumnus and former All-American Stefan Pampulov has been selected as the new head coach of the Sea Warrior men's and women's tennis teams, succeeding Henry Somerville, who retired after 10 seasons.
Pampulov, 29, played under Somerville from 1999-2003, and was an All-American in 2000, leading HPU to the NCAA Championship Tournament that same year. He was also one of the top-ranked players in the country in 2002, leading the Sea Warriors to a second place finish nationally in Division II.
The Dornbirn, Austria native received his bachelor's degree in international business in 2002, and completed his master's degree in business the following year. After graduating, he stayed close to the courts as the Head Tennis Pro at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP), and as an assistant coach for the Sea Warriors from August 2003 to May 2004. He was also the Head Coach of the Junior Tournament team at the Oahu Club in Hawai'i Kai. Currently, Pampulov is employed as a real estate market analyst at Fidelity National Financial in Honolulu. "I'm very excited to be chosen for this prestigious position," he said. "I will do my best to represent HPU in the community, and at the same time hopefully achieve great results on the court."
