Hopkins Finds Home at HPU

Hawai'i Pacific University women's basketball is in its third year of existence and is ready to explode onto the local and national scene. Following an 8-19 campaign last season, how will they do it? Answer: Hawaii's own Mana Hopkins.

Jeff Harada, who took over the program in April 2007, had seen Hopkins lead her team to the HHSAA State Title as a junior. "Just after I accepted the head coaching position at HPU, I immediately remembered Mana. She was just a junior for Konawaena High School at the time, but I already knew I had to have her."

And two years later Harada got his wish.

Recruited by several mainland programs, Hopkins made the decision to stay home and become a Sea Warrior, and admits HPU was never on her radar. "I never thought about playing at HPU, but Coach (Jeff Harada) made me feel so wanted. In my many conversations with him, I knew HPU was the place for me both academically and athletically. It was also an opportunity for me to leave Kona but still give my family and friends an opportunity to see me play."

After being wildly successful in her high school career, Hopkins is excited about taking her game to the next level. "Preseason practice (at HPU) has been going well for me, and I'm so excited to step out on the floor for that first game," says Hopkins.

After defeating Punahou in the 2007 state final, a game in which she scored 26 points, Hopkins looked forward to another season for the Wildcats while several of her close teammates accepted offers to play in the mainland. "I saw some of my teammates go to the mainland but end up being unhappy," Hopkins said. "That, along with the opportunity to play at HPU, helped me make my decision to stay home."

Coach Harada couldn't be more excited about Hopkins' progress. "There is a huge difference between high school and college basketball and Mana is adapting quickly. She is adjusting very well."

Not only is she adjusting – she is ready to take the PacWest by storm. "Mana is going to be a star in this league right away," praises Harada. "Her work ethic is already there and that's something you can't coach."

"This could be the most talented team I have ever played on," says Hopkins. "I'm so happy that we are improving and I'm going to be part of something great."

HPU also add Tiara Fernandez. Originally from Lambertville, Michigan, she is a graduate of Bedford High School where her team won the League Championship in her junior and senior seasons. She earned an All-League Honorable Mention selection this past season.

Local star Monica Chock (Aiea, HI) will also be joining the Sea Warriors this Fall. Neely comes to HPU after a stand out season for Cerritos. She was named the 2007-08 Co-South Coast Conference South Division Player of the Year, and was also a Third-Team California All-State selection. The 5-10 forward averaged 13.3 points per game, and pulled down 7.7 rebounds and dished out 2.4 assists per game. She also posted nearly two steals per game, and had 1.4 blocks per game.

Head Coach Jeff Harada comments on her all-around game. “Mal is a proven scorer at the Junior College level while her length and athleticism make her a tough defender and rebounder as well. She is a very complete player who is a great addition to our program.”

Lewis comes to HPU as another premier player from Cerritos, standing at an impressive 5’11. She was also the 2007-08 Co-South Coast Conference South Division Player of the Year, sharing that distinction with teammate Maltresa Neely. “Genesis brings size and versatility to the forward position,” comments Harada. “She is tough in the paint and can step out on the perimeter as well which makes her hard to guard. She will fit in nicely to our system.”

Lewis last season averaged 10.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She also shot 47% from the field.

Wilson comes to HPU as arguably the most versatile member of the trio. “Tiffany’s athleticism and ability to play three different positions will create mismatches and give us options on the perimeter,” said Harada. Wilson (5’10) posted 10.4 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. She also shot 50% from the field and 40% from beyond the arc. She was a 2007-08 First Team South Coast Conference South Division selection. “Her leadership and work ethic will be very beneficial to our program as well as our success,” adds Harada.

Kruetter played every minute, dropping 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Down the stretch, solid defense and made free throws by Kreutter and Angela Spence (4 pts) sealed the victory for HPU.

HPU officially closed the book on seniors Ashley Jenkins, Jocelyn Norris, Lauren Lawson, Natalie Mitchell, and Venus Lee. The five seniors were honored for their contributions to Sea Warrior basketball this past Saturday, February 23 against Dixie State College.

Sea Warriors Swept By Dixie State, Seniors Honored

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (2/23/08) – At Kaiser High School, the HPU men’s and women’s basketball teams each fell to Dixie State College. The men’s team lost 82-73, while the Lady Sea Warriors dropped their third game in a row, 65-58. Following each game the seniors were honored for their contributions to the HPU basketball program.

The Lady Sea Warriors (7-19) came out with a very anemic first half. They scored only 18 points, shooting 33% from the field and just 1-6 from beyond the arc. Despite the dismal first half shooting, HPU remained tough defensively and trailed just 26-18 at the half.

After a Lindsey Chettinger three-pointer gave DSU (13-10) a 33-23 lead less than three minutes into the second half, HPU finally got their motor running. Natalie Mitchell (8 pts, 6 reb) and Ashley Jenkins carried HPU on a 9-1 run to pull even at 34-34 with 12:44 remaining in the game. Karras Blate and Jenkins tied for team honors with 12 points, and Chettinger and Jessica Carver led all scorers with 17 points each.

On the men’s side, HPU (8-18) and DSU (11-12) played a tough and emotional contest. Jason Curtis and Rishi Kakad tied DSU’s Landon Clegg with a game-high 19 points. DSU struck first, as Clegg capped an early 16-5 spurt with a driving layup.

Lady Sea Warriors Finding Stride In Route Of Argonauts

HPU men fall short in comeback effort

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (2/15/08) – At Kaiser High School, the HPU men’s and women’s basketball teams battled Notre Dame de Namur University in a PacWest doubleheader. The men’s team fell 71-59 to the Argos, while the Lady Sea Warriors won decisively, 82-60.

On the men’s side, HPU (6-17, 3-11) fell behind early in falling to NDNU (9-13, 5-9) for the second time this season. A three-point NDNU lead with 7:22 remaining in the first half swelled to 34-19 on the heels of a 17-5 Argo run.

The 15 point lead entering the second half set the stage for an HPU comeback, and with 9:52 remaining in the game, the Sea Warriors held a 45-43 lead. NDNU would recover and close to the 12-point win. Jason Curtis tied Dan Bergeron for game honors with 20 points, and Rishi Kakad posted 14 points.

The Lady Sea Warriors (7-16) won for the fourth time in five games, evening their conference record at 7-7. They atoned for an early defeat of NDNU with the resounding win. Ashley Jenkins dropped a career high 37 points, as she lead the way for the Sea Warriors.

Despite the dominant effort, HPU waited until the second half to take command of the game. The Sea Warriors scored the first 11 points of the second half, distancing themselves from the even game. Jocelyne Norris posted 12 points and eight rebounds and Angela Spence dropped seven points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Tanaia Keyes led the Argos with 13 points.

HPU and NDNU will face off again tomorrow, Saturday, February 16 at Kaiser High School. Tip off for the women’s game is set for 5:30 p.m. with the men’s game following at 7:30 p.m.

Sea Warriors Split Against Grand Canyon

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (2/13/08) - At Kaiser High School, the HPU men’s and women’s basketball teams split a PacWest doubleheader with Grand Canyon University. The Lady Warriors’ three-game winning streak came to an end with a 70-68 overtime loss, and the men’s team righted the ship with an 85-78 victory over the Antelopes.

On the ladies side, HPU (6-16, 6-7) lost for the first time in nearly three weeks. After double-digit losses in their first two meetings, the Sea Warriors responded well against the current conference leaders. Ashley Jenkins posted 13 points and 11 rebounds, but also recorded a season high 10 turnovers.

Despite the loss, HPU made a valiant run to send the game into overtime. Trailing 57-49 with 4:25 to play, the Sea Warriors ran off 10 straight points to take a two-point lead. Angela Spence (8 pts) capped the run with a jumper at the 2:35 mark. Buckets by Samantha Murphy (16 pts) and Rosalyn Nelson (11 pts) helped send the game into overtime for the ‘Lopes who eventually stole the win.

On the men’s side, HPU (6-16, 3-10) captured a much needed win after a humbling defeat at the hands of BYUH just days ago. Justonn Smith had a monster night on the boards, snatching 15 rebounds in addition to shooting 4-5 for 12 points. Jason Curtis delivered one of his best performances in a Sea Warrior uniform, dropping 21 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out seven assists.

The lead dwindled, and the Sea Warriors found themselves trailing 65-56 with 12:20 remaining in the game. David Gonzales drained one of his five three-pointers to give GCU the nine point lead. Gonzales led all scorers with 33 points on 12-17 shooting.

Sea Warriors Turn Away Undefeated Silverswords

Lady Sea Warriors Top Chaminade

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (2/3/08) – At McCabe Gym on the campus of Chaminade University, the HPU men’s and women’s basketball teams took two games from the Silverswords. HPU turned back undefeated Chaminade in the men’s game, 63-57, and the Lady Sea Warriors dominated en route to a 78-65 win.

On the men’s side, HPU (5-15, 2-9) upended a Chaminade team that had been steamrolling through the PacWest, and stood alone at the top of the standings. Five Sea Warriors scored eight or more points, led by Rishi Kakad with 14 points. Defense prevailed for HPU, as they held CUH to just 32% shooting in the second half to steal the victory.

Both teams played an even contest in the early going, until Chaminade closed the first half on a 14-4 run to lead 33-20. The second half saw CUH extend the lead to 41-24 on a Marko Kolaric (6 pts, 18 reb) jumper. Facing their largest deficit of the game, HPU regrouped and put together a 15-3 run to pull within six points at 44-39. Three-pointers by Ryan Walker and Logan Wolf keyed the run. Trailing 50-46 with 6:56 remaining, HPU scored the game’s next 11 points to grab a 57-50 lead. Kakad drained all three of his three-pointers during the run. The HPU defense was stingy down the stretch, as they pulled off the memorable win.

Ryan Walker and Logan Wolf each dropped nine points, with Deonte Johnson grabbing a team high seven rebounds. Stewart Kussler posted 21 points to lead all scorers.

On the ladies side, HPU and Chaminade played in a tight battle until the Sea Warriors broke away in the second half to win going away. HPU built an early 21-10 lead on a three-pointer by Ashley Jenkins with 11:34 remaining in the first half. Jenkins finished with a game-high 23 points.

Chaminade responded with a 15-4 run capped by a layup from Simrin Cummins (14 pts), as the half ended with a 33-29 HPU lead. The second half saw CUH come all the way back, tying the game at 37-37 less than four minutes into the half. That was as close as the Silverswords would get, as a 15-3 spurt gave HPU a lead they would not relinquish. Six points by Angela Spence (16 pts) keyed the HPU run, as the Sea Warriors led by as much as 19 points before leaving with the win. Karras Blate (13 pts) and Jocelyne Norris (12 pts) rounded out the HPU double-figure scorers.

Both teams retake the court Saturday, February 9 against BYU-Hawai‘i at the Neal Blaisdell Center. Tip-off for the women’s game is set for 5:30 p.m., with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 p.m. The men’s game will be broadcast on KWHE-TV 14 and simulcast on KUMU AM 1500.

Sea Warriors Rise From The Deep

Honolulu, Hawai'i (1/30/08) HPU delivered two strong performances tonight, with the Lady Sea Warriors topping the Lady Silverswords 69-55, and the men falling short of an upset against undefeated Chaminade, 80-72. Karras Blate dropped 18 points in the win for the Lady Sea Warriors, with Jason Curtis posting a career high 28 points in the loss for the HPU men.

The Lady Sea Warriors (4-15, 4-6) topped Chaminade (0-17, 0-10) for the second time this season in the first live televised broadcast of women’s collegiate basketball in Hawai‘i. After struggling on their recent road trip, HPU returned to form to notch their fourth conference victory. Blate’s 18 points came on 6-13 shooting and 4-7 from beyond the arc. Jocelyne Norris delivered arguably her best performance in an HPU uniform, dropping 13 points on 5-10 shooting while grabbing a personal high 16 rebounds.

Ashley Jenkins (15 pts, 8 reb, 6 ast) and Angela Spence (12 pts, 5 reb) also played well. Caitlin Prager led the way for Chaminade with 17 points and seven rebounds.

On the men’s side, HPU (4-15, 1-9) looked to atone for the 28-point drumming in their previous meeting with Chaminade (15-4, 10-0). After the Silverswords opened a 30-14 lead, a dominant victory for Chaminade seemed certain, but HPU had other ideas. The Sea Warriors settled down, and responded to cut the deficit to 39-31 at halftime.

The lead shrunk to five points in the second half, as HPU kept Chaminade off the boards and eyed the comeback and the possible upset. Down the stretch though, it was the Silverswords who pulled out the victory in one of their harder fought PacWest victories.

Jason Curtis led all scorers, dropping 28 points on 10-17 shooting. Ryan Walker and Justonn Smith also delivered solid performances. Walker posted 14 points including 3-5 from beyond the arc, and Smith dropped 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Marko Kolaric posted 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Chaminade.

Both teams match wits against the Silverswords again this Sunday, February 3, in their final meetings of the season. The women’s game tips off at 1:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game at 3:30 p.m. Both games take place at McCabe Gym on the campus of Chaminade University. The men’s game will be broadcast live on KUMU AM 1500.

Sea Warriors Disappointing in Loss To Rebels

St. George, Utah (1/26/08) – On the campus of Dixie State College, the HPU Lady Sea Warrior basketball team fell to Dixie State College in their most lopsided loss of the PacWest season. HPU falls to 3-6 in conference, and 3-15 overall. DSC improves to 4-2 in the PacWest and 10-7 overall.

After a game opening bucket by Angela Spence (13 pts), the Lady Rebels ran off 16 consecutive points for an early 16-2 lead. After Natalie Mitchell (7 pts) cut into the lead with a three-pointer, HPU went on a dry spell, failing to register a field goal for 5:40 minutes. DSC took a 44-23 lead into halftime.

The Sea Warriors looked to spark their offense in the second half, and did just that with an 11-0 run capped by an Ashley Jenkins jumper to cut the lead to 48-34 just 5:35 into the second half. HPU could not sustain the effort, and saw the Rebels slowly build the lead back up and win going away.

Jenkins led the way for HPU with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Emily Kreutter pulled down a game and HPU career record 18 rebounds. Jessica Carver (DSC) led all scorers with 18 points.

Lady Sea Warriors Oust BYU-Hawai‘i

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (1/19/08) – The HPU women’s basketball program continues to make history, eclipsing last season’s win total with a 70-68 win over BYU-Hawai‘i (2-13, 2-4). HPU (3-13, 3-4) posted consecutive victories for the first time in program history in gaining their third victory in the last four games.

The Sea Warriors dominated the first half as they took a 36-28 lead into the intermission. After BYUH grabbed an early 6-3 lead, HPU took off on a 12-2 run capped by a jumper from Ashley Jenkins. Jenkins scored a game-high 20 points. The lead swelled to 13 points before a late Seasider surge cut into the deficit before halftime.

The second half saw BYUH slowly chip away at the Sea Warrior lead, as they trailed just 62-60 with 2:46 remaining in the game. Richelle Fenebock drove to the basket for two of her team-high 15 points to bring BYUH to within two points. HPU appeared rattled moments later when Shaina Siliga (13 P) tied the score with a three-pointer, but solid free throw shooting down the stretch earned HPU the victory. They drained seven of eight shots from the line in the final 1:20.

Jocelyn Norris had arguably her best performance of the season, dropping 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Angela Spence also dominated on both ends of the court, posting 12 points and eight rebounds. Laie, Hawai‘i (1/16/08) – Ashley Jenkins came up one rebound shy of a triple-double, Karras Blate delivered her best statistical performance of the season, and HPU defeated BYU-Hawai‘i, 78-74. The Sea Warriors notched their second win of the season and improve to 2-4 in the PacWest and 2-13 overall. BYUH falls to 2-12 (2-3).

HPU’s first road victory of the season was hard earned. The Sea Warriors held the lead for most of the first half but were unable to shake the Lady Seasiders. Jocelyn Norris (10 P) recorded the first two baskets of the second half to give HPU a 41-33 advantage. The Seasiders remained in striking distance, but a Karras Blate (20 P, 5 R) three-pointer with 10:32 remaining in the game increased to a 58-47 HPU lead.

The Seasiders responded once again, as Ika Felisita’s layup with 3:53 remaining cut the lead to 65-62. Felisita finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The final minutes of the game featured a free-throw shooting contest, with Jenkins (19 P, 9 R, 11 A) and Blate draining clutch foul shots to seal the victory.

Angela Spence continued her solid play, shooting 50% from the field for 16 points while grabbing six rebounds. Richelle Fenenbock (BYUH) led all scorers with 22 points.

Sea Warrior Basketball Teams Fall To UH-Hilo

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (1/12/08) – At the Neal Blaisdell Center, the HPU men’s and women’s basketball teams fell to UH-Hilo in a PacWest doubleheader. The Lady Sea Warriors (1-13, 1-4) dropped an 86-73 result while the men (4-10, 1-4) fell 82-76 in overtime.

In the second time in as many days, the Lady Sea Warriors saw a close contest with the Vulcans slip away. After a three-pointer by Nesha Kimitete (17 P) gave UH-Hilo an early 20-11 lead, HPU responded with a 10-0 run capped by an Ashley Jenkins jumper. The Sea Warriors would take a 36-35 lead into halftime.

The second half saw a 51-point outburst by the Lady Vulcans, an offensive output too high for HPU to keep up. The Lady Sea Warriors still had an opportunity to steal the victory, as clutch free throw shots by Jennifer Sweeney (7 P, 6 R) cut the Vulcan lead to 71-68 with 3:06 to play. That was as close as HPU would come, as UHH ran off nine unanswered points to win going away.

Karras Blate led HPU with 17 points, followed by Jenkins who dropped 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sheila Azevedo (UHH) led all scorers with 27 points.

On the men’s side, HPU dropped their second overtime game of the season. The Sea Warriors opened the game with the hot hand. Baskets by Justonn Smith and Rod Harmon (8 P) highlighted an opening 15-4 spurt. The Vulcans would respond, and crept back to within two points. Jacob Briggs (11 P) laid a ball in with 3:48 to play in the first half to cut to a 25-23 HPU lead.

The second half saw HPU lead by the slimmest of margins until a three-pointer by Vince Alvarado (UHH) tied the score at 54-54 with 7:03 to play in the game. Clutch free throw shooting by Smith and baskets by Jason Curtis (8 P) kept the game close, as both teams headed into overtime deadlocked at 66-66.

Jay De Maestri led UH Hilo with 18 points, and Smith and Kakad tied for game high honors with 19 points each.

Both teams return to the court Wednesday, January 16 as they take on BYU-Hawai‘i at the Canon Activities Center in Laie, HI. Tipoff for the women’s game is set for 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game. The men’s game will be broadcast on KUMU AM 1500 radio.

HPU Responds On Alumni Night

Honolulu, Hawai'i (1/11/08) – On a night where the 1993 National Champions were honored, the HPU men's basketball team won a hard fought contest against a scrappy UH-Hilo team, 77-44. The Lady Sea Warriors were not as fortunate, falling to the Lady Vulcans, 94-90.

On the men's side, HPU earned a well deserved first conference victory. Rod Harmon found his touch from beyond the arc, hitting 5-7 from three point land for 20 points. Jason Curtis was his usual poised self at the point guard position, posting 20 points and seven rebounds. Rishi Kakad put in a solid effort in recording 10 points.

Jay De Maestri led all scorers for UH Hilo with 25 points.

With lead changes abundant throughout the game, HPU and UH-Hilo found themselves knotted at 70-70 after a layup by Justonn Smith (7 P, 6 R) with 3:36 to play in the game. Baskets down the stretch by Kakad and Curtis kept the Sea Warrior lead at three points, with a last ditch three-point try by De Maestri clanking off the side of the rim. The Sea Warriors improve to 4-9, 1-3 in conference while UH-Hilo falls to 5-4 (1-1).

The Lady Sea Warriors fought an equally tough battle, but came up on the short end of the stick in falling 94-90. The 90 points was the highest point total of the season for HPU but unfortunately came in a losing effort. The Sea Warriors saw great performances by Ashley Jenkins and Angela Spence, who scored 32 and 18 points respectively. Jenkins shot 12-19 from the field while Spence was an impressive 8-12. Jocelyn Norris dropped 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, and Karras Blate posted 13 points.

Looking for the first winning streak in program history, HPU saw a two-point lead turn into an 18-point halftime deficit. After Spence drained a jumper with 7:25 to play in the half to give HPU a 30-28 lead, the Vulcans raced off on a 21-4 run for the big lead. The second half saw HPU treat the raucous crowd to a monumental comeback, and take an 87-85 lead on a pair of Jenkins free throws with 2:44 to play. They would not be able to complete the comeback, though, as UH Hilo squeezed by with the four-point victory.

Sheila Azevedo led the Vulcans with 22 points.

All four teams retake the Neal Blaisdell Center court tomorrow, January 12, for another conference doubleheader. The Lady Sea Warriors tip-off with the Lady Vulcans at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game between the same schools.

Men’s Basketball Stumbles, Lady Sea Warriors Notch Historic Win

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (1/9/08) – A PacWest doubleheader between Chaminade and Hawai‘i Pacific University featured both joy and heartache. While HPU men’s basketball fell to a hot shooting Silversword team, 84-56, the Lady Sea Warriors defeated Chaminade, 70-63, for the first home win in the short history of the program.

On the men’s side, HPU (3-9, 0-3) were severely outplayed by Chaminade (8-4, 3-0) in the 28-point loss. The opening minutes featured a close affair, as Rod Harmon (2 P, 5 R) drove in for a layup 3:41 into the game to cut the CUH lead to 9-8. The rest of the game was not pretty, as a 20-3 run midway through the first half broke the game wide open.

Misha Radojevic performed well once again, posting a team high 13 points and five rebounds. Justonn Smith dropped 12 points and Jason Curtis garnered nine points and five rebounds. Mike Green (CUH) led all scorers with 19 points.

On the ladies side, HPU’s historic win was a hard fought one, as the Lady Sea Warriors (1-11, 1-2) overcame a 10-point second half deficit to secure the win against Chaminade (0-10, 0-3). Trailing 34-28 at the half, HPU saw the Lady Swords open the second half on a quick 6-2 run to extend to a 40-30 lead, the largest of the game for either team.

HPU would finally make their push, and cut the lead to 47-45 on the heels of a 12-2 run. Ashley Jenkins (11 P) drained a three-pointer to cap the run. With seven minutes to play, Emily Kreutter laid a ball in for a 57-56 Sea Warriors lead, one they would not relinquish. Kreutter was fantastic on the night, dropping 12 points and grabbing 12 rebounds for the double-double. The win was another team effort, as five Sea Warriors posted double figures, led by center Angela Spence with 17 points on 7-10 shooting. Simrin Cummins (CUH) led all scorers with 18 points. HPU basketball returns this Friday, January 11, as both teams face off with UH-Hilo in another PacWest showdown. Men's And Women's Basketball Drop Conference Openers

Phoenix, Arizona (1/2/08) - The Sea Warrior men's and women's basketball teams dropped their respective PacWest openers to Grand Canyon University. The Lady Sea Warriors fell 79-46, and the men's team lost 73-68. On the Lady’s side, the Antelopes (5-7, 1-0) proved to be too much for the Lady Sea Warriors, who fell to 0-10 on the season. Guard Ashley Jenkins led the way for HPU, dropping a game-high 21 points on 7-15 shooting. The ‘Lopes had four players post double figures, led by Rosalyn Nelson with 20 points.

In so many games this season, the opposition raced out to an early lead. The same transpired today, as GCU opened an early 14-2 lead. Consecutive layups by Samantha Murphy (17 P) led to the 12-point advantage. HPU scored their first basket of the game with 11:39 to play in the first half, as Karras Blate (4 P) nailed a three-pointer to cut the GCU lead to 18-5.

As in many games this season, HPU finally found their stride. A Jenkins three ball with 4:31 to play in the first half cut the lead to 21-11. With HPU looking to make a game of it, GCU opened the second half with a 21-0 run to all but seal matters. HPU scored their first points of the half as Jocelyn Norris (6 P, 6 R) laid a ball in for a 51-18 Antelope lead, but GCU would cruised to the 33-point victory. The ‘Lopes were dominant in the paint, outscoring HPU 24-10.

The second half of the PacWest doubleheader featured a closer matchup with the same result. In the loss for HPU, Jason Curtis led all scorers with 20 points, and Justonn Smith posted eight points and six rebounds. Rishi Kakad delivered a solid performance for HPU, dropping 11 points with four rebounds.

HPU started off strong, as three-pointers by Kakad and Rod Harmon (5 P) helped build a 10-3 HPU lead just 4:43 into the game. GCU battled back and took a 30-23 lead with 4:52 remaining in the first half. David Gonzales (10 P) drained a three-pointer to extend to the seven-point lead.

The second half saw a close battle slowly slip away from the Sea Warriors. After a Ryan Walker three-pointer 2:50 into the half cut the GCU lead to 40-38, the Antelopes went on a 17-4 run. Trailing by as much as 17 points, HPU mounted a comeback. A 10-0 ran got the Sea Warriors right back in the game, and after another Walker three ball with 1:05 remaining, the Antelope lead had been cut to 70-66. The comeback would fall short, as GCU escaped with the 73-68 win.

Latoya Wright (UNO) led all scorers, dropping 26 points on 10-14 shooting.

HPU fell behind early, as 12 unanswered points lead to a 12-3 Mavs advantage. HPU regrouped and matched UNO’s scoring the rest of the half. Angela Spence (7 pts) and Natalie Mitchell (8 pts) scored the final points of the half for a 35-24 Mavs lead.

HPU were unable to build on the momentum from the first half, and saw the game slip away in the early moments of the second half. A 7-2 Mavs run helped build a 51-30 advantage. Alyssa Green (14 points, 8 rebounds) laid a ball in with 14:04 remaining for the 21-point lead. UNO would coast to the 41-point win.

Ashley Jenkins led HPU with 15 points and four assists, and Jocelyn Norris put forth a solid effort with six points and eight rebounds.

HPU depart tomorrow for Phoenix, Arizona to join the men’s team for a PacWest doubleheader with Grand Canyon University. The Lady Sea Warriors tip-off with the Antelopes at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2, followed by the men’s game at 4:30.

Double Trouble – HPU Drops Doubleheader to Colorado School of Mines

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (12/22/07) – At the Neal Blaisdell Center, the HPU men’s and women’s basketball teams took on the Colorado School of Mines in a non-conference doubleheader. The Lady Sea Warriors played game one, losing 69-63, and the men fell in the nightcap, 73-61.

On the ladies side, HPU (0-8) sought their first victory but fell short in their closest game of the season. The Lady Sea Warriors grabbed the lead in the early going, as Jocelyn Norris (13 pts) put home a jumper just inside of 14 minutes to play, giving HPU an 11-8 lead. The Orediggers (6-4) would respond and take a 31-22 lead into halftime.

Battling uphill for the most of the game, HPU cut the lead to six points on several occasions. They made one final push when Emily Kruetter scored on a layup with 2:07 to play to cut the Oredigger lead to 63-57. But Mines would hold on, as solid free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the victory. Ashley Jenkins led all scorers, dropping 23 points on 8-24 shooting. Karras Blate delivered another solid effort off the bench with 10 points. Emily Dalton led the way for the Orediggers with 20 points.

The nightcap saw a tight battle that would eventually slip away from the Sea Warriors, who fell to 3-5 on the season. HPU held slim leads for most of the first half, but it was Mines (6-4) who took a 37-33 lead into halftime. Ryan Walker kept HPU rolling, shooting 3-3 from downtown for 11 points. HPU shot 57% from the field in the half.

The second half saw the two opponents trade baskets in the early going, but a three-point play converted by Rishi Kakad at the 3:33 mark narrowed the gap to 44-42. Mines responded with a 10-3 run capped by a three pointer by Kyle Pape. The run proved to be the capper, as the Orediggers maintained a double digit lead for the rest of the game.

Kakad, Walker, and Jason Curtis all scored in double figures for HPU. Walker finished with 11 points, with Curtis posting 15 points and adding five assists. Kakad led HPU with 19 points. Justonn Smith and Baba Coulibaly each grabbed four rebounds in the losing effort.

Lady Sea Warriors Fall Short To Redhawks

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (12/20/07) – Seeking to atone for their earlier defeat to Seattle University, the HPU women’s basketball team played well but fell to the Lady Redhawks, 56-75. The Lady Sea Warriors fall to 0-7, while Seattle improved to a perfect 8-0. The game was played on the campus of Farrington High School.

HPU took the court determined to slow down the potent Redhawk offense. Laina Sobczak drained a jumper to give Seattle an early 8-2 cushion, but HPU were showing that the Redhawks were going to have to earn every point. The Sea Warriors fought back, as Emily Kreutter (12 points, 4 rebounds) scored on a layup with 10:32 left in the half to cut the Seattle lead to 17-16.

Kruetter’s bucket would be as close as HPU would come, as the Redhawks opened a sizable lead heading to halftime. A three-pointer by Cassidy Murillo (8 points, 4 assists) with 1:07 remaining capped a 13-2 Redhawk run. Chelsie Morrison (10 points) then hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Seattle a 45-28 halftime lead.

HPU were determined to keep fighting, and though the Redhawk lead grew to 22 points in the second half, HPU were outscored by only two points (30-28) in the period. In losing by 19 points, the Lady Sea Warriors shaved 12 points of their previous loss to Seattle. Ashley Jenkins dropped a game high 18 points, also grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists. Emily Kruetter and Karras Blate also delivered solid performances, posting 11 and 12 points respectively. Honolulu, Hawai‘i (12/18/07) – At Kilauea Recreation Center, the HPU Lady Sea Warrior basketball team fell to Angelo State University, 83-57. The game versus the Lady Rams was the second and final game for HPU in the Malika Sports Hoop ‘N Surf Tournament.

HPU played even with the Rams for most of the first half. Ashley Jenkins posted 10 points and seven rebounds in the half and the Sea Warriors shot just over 40% from the field. After trailing by seven points early in the game, Karras Blate drained a three-pointer with 10:15 remaining to give HPU a 15-13 lead. The Rams responded with a 14-4 run to take a 27-19 lead with 4:07 remaining in the half. HPU closed the gap in the waning moments as Angelo State took a 35-30 lead into intermission.

After a strong first half, HPU saw the lead quickly swell to 10 points. A three-pointer by Lindsey Leatherman and a jumper by Tiffany Hardwell (5 pts, 2 assists) opened up a 40-30 lead for ASU. HPU was unable to break the Ram momentum, as the lead grew to 25 points. ASU outscored the Sea Warriors 48-27 in the second frame to take control of the game and grab the 26 point victory.

Jenkins dropped a game-high 27 points on 9-23 shooting, 3-6 from beyond the arc. Blate added 11 points and three assists, and Emily Kreutter grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Leatherman led the way for the Rams with 23 points.

HPU have one day off to prepare for Seattle University, as they face off with SU Thursday, December 20. The Sea Warriors will look to atone for an earlier 83-49 defeat this season to SU. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. at Farrington High School.

HPU Disappointing In Loss To Truman State

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (12/17/07) - At Kilauea Recreation Center, in the opening game of the Malika Sports Hoop 'N Surf Tournament, the Lady Sea Warrior basketball team fell to Truman State 88-55. After a grueling early schedule, Coach Harada felt his Sea Warriors had a chance to notch their first victory of the season, but it was not to be. HPU falls to 0-5 while Truman State improves to 7-1.

HPU saw any opportunity to grab an early dashed, as the Lady Bulldogs scored early and often. A three-pointer by Julie Guinn (8 pts) just 5:33 into the game capped a 13-0 run for a 21-4 TSU lead. HPU responded, as Ashley Jenkins drained a jumper with 11:09 to play to cut the lead to 23-10. Eventually the lead would swell to 24 points before Karras Blate nailed a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to bring the halftime score to 42-21.

The second half saw a continued dominance by Truman State. The Bulldogs opened matters with a 15-1 run capped by a jumper from Laura Joya (2 pts) just over five minutes into the half for a 57-24 lead. The tone was set for the rest of the game, as TSU coasted to the 88-55 victory.

Ashley Jenkins (HPU) posted 20 points and Georgia Mueller (TSU) had a game high 25 points. Jenkins also led HPU with two assists. Lauren Lawson shot 2-4 for seven points and one assist, and Karras Blate contributed five points in 13 minutes off the bench.

HPU retakes the court tomorrow, December 18, for their second and final game of the Tournament. They face off with Angelo State University at 12:00 p.m. at Kilauea Recreation Center.

Fighting Sioux Too Much for Lady Sea Warriors

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (12/15/07) – At McKinley High School Gymnasium, the HPU Lady Sea Warrior basketball team fell to North Dakota, 92-44. HPU played well in spurts but proved to be no match for the top-ranked Fighting Sioux. HPU falls to 0-4 while UND improves to a perfect 11-0.

UND jumped out to an early 10-3 lead as Ashley Langen drained a jumper to cap an 8-0 run. HPU responded with consecutive three-pointers by Karras Blate and Ashley Jenkins to cut the lead to 12-9. Points for the Sea Warriors would be hard to come by for most of the half. A layup by Alys Seay with 6:22 to play in the half pushed the UND lead to 35-15. With the half winding down, HPU managed to cut the UND lead to 16 points, and trailed 44-28 at intermission.

The second half saw the Fighting Sioux take control and cruise to the 48 point victory. UND outscored a tired Sea Warrior team 48-16 for the dominant win. UND were able to force HPU into difficult spots, posting 32 points off of tournovers. Ashley Jenkins and Karras Blate led the way for HPU, dropping 16 and 12 points respectively. Blate drove to the hoop on several occasions, earning trips to the free throw line where she shot 6-8. Jenkins and Langen tied for game high honors in points.

Lady Sea Warriors Take Aim At The Summit

Honolulu, Hawai‘i (12/13/07) – Building a collegiate athletic program is never easy; just ask HPU Women’s Basketball Coach Jeff Harada. But to be the best you need to play the best, and HPU is doing nothing short of just that. The Lady Sea Warriors are set to take on the nation’s top team, as the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota roll into town undefeated and ranked #1 in NCAA Division II. The two teams will tipoff at McKinley High School this Saturday, December 15 at 6:30 p.m.

HPU (0-3) hopes to be well rested for their home opener, having not played in nearly two weeks. The Lady Sea Warriors most recently competed in the Dave Cox Classic in Seattle, Washington where they fell to Central Washington, 76-60, and Seattle University, 83-49. The game against UND serves as an opportunity for the Sea Warrior players to see first-hand the level they are striving to reach.

Senior point guard Ashley Jenkins (Ft. Washington, Maryland) leads HPU with 10 points per game, and will be called upon to deliver for the Sea Warriors. Centers Angela Spence (Carpinteria, California) and Jocelyn Norris (Bakersfield, California) will have their hands full trying to defend UND’s Kierah Kimborough and Ashley Langen. Both players are averaging over 14 points and eight assists per game.

Following the game with the Fighting Sioux, HPU takes part in the Annual Malika Hoop ‘N Surf Tournament. They face off with Truman State (Kirksville, Missouri) on Monday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m., and Angelo State (San Angelo, Texas) on Tuesday, December 18 at 10:00 a.m. Both games will take place at the Kilauea Recreation Center.

Sea Warriors Fall To Seattle University

Seattle, Washington (12/1/07) – On the final day of the Dave Cox Classic, the HPU Lady Sea Warrior basketball team fell to host Seattle University, 83-49. The loss drops HPU to 0-3 on the season while Seattle improves to a perfect 6-0. Each loss has come at the hands of undefeated teams.

HPU got off to a fast start for the first time this season. Ashley Jenkins (10 pts, 2 assists) opened up the game with a layup and a three-pointer for a 5-2 HPU lead 59 seconds into the contest. The Sea Warriors built on the lead as Angela Spence (7 pts) converted on a three-point play 4:58 into the game for a 15-8 lead.

HPU could not maintain the lead, as SU took off on a 15-3 run. A layup by Laina Sobczak (7 pts) with 3:25 remaining in the first half put Seattle up 33-18. The lead would swell to 41-21 as both teams entered halftime.

The second saw an even contest until a three-pointer with 11:38 remaining by Leah Stepovich sparked a 12-2 Seattle run. HPU could not recover, as SU won going away. For the game, HPU shot just under 24% from the field and just over 70% from the line. Three Sea Warriors posted double figures in the loss. Emily Kreutter dropped 13 points and grabbed five rebounds, and reserve forward Karras Blate posted 10 points and shot 5-6 from the line.

Stepovich led all scorers with 16 points.

After three games in four days, HPU returns home to prepare for arguably their toughest opponent of the season – #1-ranked University of North Dakota. The Sea Warriors and Fighting Sioux take to the court Sunday, December 15. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at McKinley High School.

Lady Sea Warriors Rebound In Losing Effort

Seattle, Washington (11/30/07) – No team should be pleased with a loss, but Coach Jeff Harada had to smile at the 76-60 loss to Central Washington. Just two days earlier, HPU lost to these same Lady Wildcats, 90-44. This was the first of two games for the Sea Warriors at the Dave Cox Classic hosted by Seattle University. HPU falls to 0-2 while CWU improves to 5-0.

While the result left something to be desired, the response from two days earlier was worthy of much praise. Nikki Jordan again had a solid outing off the bench, dropping 17 points on 6-12 shooting. Ashley Jenkins returned to form with 15 points and seven rebounds. Newcomer Emily Kreutter posted nine points, driving the lane and getting to the foul line where she shot 7-10.

Despite the solid outing, the opening minutes spelled trouble for HPU. After a layup by Shaina Afoa, the Wildcats led 13-2. HPU held strong, pulling to within eight points with 6:36 remaining in the half on two made free throws by Karras Blate (6 pts). CWU extended the lead to 36-20 to enter halftime.

The second half saw the Wildcat lead extend to as much as 25 points, but the Sea Warriors would not be deterred. Trailing 64-41, HPU went on a 10-0 run beginning with a jumper by Angela Spence (5 pts, 3 rebounds) and capped by two free throws from Jordan. Time would run out on the Sea Warriors as the Wildcats cruised to the 16 point win.

Four Wildcats posted double figures, with Afoa scoring a game high 18 points.

HPU turns right around and will play host Seattle University tomorrow, December 1 to close the tournament and their three-game road trip. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m. PST.

HPU Overwhelmed In Season Opener

Ellensburg, Washington (11/28/07) – At Nicholson Pavilion on the campus of Central Washington University, the HPU Lady Sea Warriors fell to the host Wildcats, 90-44. HPU begins the season 0-1 while CWU improves to a perfect 4-0.

The decisive loss was certainly a disappointment to an HPU team that featured a slew of fresh talent to go along with first year head coach Jeff Harada. Veteran All-Conference guard Ashley Jenkins was unable to find her stroke, shooting 1-13 for five points. Reserve forward Nikki Jordan was the lone bright spot for the Sea Warriors, dropping a game high 21 points in just 26 minutes of action. The Washington native also shot a perfect 8-8 from the line and pulled down six rebounds.

The Wildcats asserted their dominance from the opening tip, jumping out to an 11-0 lead 4:27 into the game. Jenkins would halt the run with two free throws. The lead swelled to 22-2 on a layup from Jenn Jacobs (14 pts) with 11:22 remaining in the half. HPU finally found a rhythm and played the Wildcats fairly even the rest of the period and trailed 48-20 at the half.

The second half again saw the lead swell. HPU delivered a much better performance, though, scoring 24 points while holding the Wildcats to 42. Center Angela Spence delivered a solid performance in the opener, scoring six points on 3-4 shooting while pulling down four rebounds.

Four Wildcats posted double figures, with Hanna Hull dropping a team high 18 points.

HPU will have another crack at the Lady Wildcats on Friday, November 30 at the Dave Cox Classic hosted by Seattle University. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. PST.

HPU Women's Basketball Eye Season Opener

Honolulu, Hawai'i (11/27/07) – With the men's team four games into the season, the HPU women's basketball is finally set for their season opener. The Lady Sea Warriors will face off with Central Washington University. Tipoff is set for Wednesday, November 28 th in Ellensburg, Washington on the campus of CWU.

The Lady Sea Warriors enter just their second season of NCAA competition, and first year Head Coach Jeff Harada will look to improve on a 2006-07 season that saw just two victories. "Our team goals are simple," states Harada. "Be the best team in the Hawai'i, be the best team in the PacWest Conference, and earn an NCAA Tournament berth. If we accomplish the first, we'll have a chance to accomplish the second and the third."

HPU will take on a Wildcat team that finished last season 17-10 and currently stands at 3-0. Following their season opener, HPU will again play CWU as well as Seattle University in the Dave Cox Classic.

HPU features veteran talent in Ashley Jenkins (Ft. Washington, Maryland), and first-year Sea Warriors in Kristin Moore (Snohomish, Washington) and Angela Spence (Carpinteria, California). Jenkins returns to the site of her best performance of the 2006-07 season, where she dropped 31 points against this very Wildcat team. Coach Harada values Jenkins' contribution. "She's worked hard on her all around game in the off-season and I expect her to be one of the top offensive players in the PacWest."

HPU competes in their first home game on December 15 against #1-ranked University of North Dakata. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at McKinley High School.

Laie, HI – In the finale of their inaugural season, the Lady Sea Warriors fell to BYU-Hawai‘i at the Canon Activities Center, 76-46. The second half saw the Sea Warriors outscore the Silverswords 33-31, but never able to grab the lead. Chaminade increased the lead to eight, but with 1:49 remaining in the contest, a Miyashiro bucket closed the lead to 61-59. They would come no closer, though, as Chaminade held on for the five point victory. There were several fine performances for the Sea Warriors. Constance DeCaires finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Kanani Thomas and Jocelyne Norris each dropped eight points, with Norris also pulling down five rebounds.

HPU will get another crack at the Swords as the two battle once more on Wednesday. Tip off is set once again at 7:00 p.m. at the Kilauea Recreation Center.

Lady Sea Warriors Overwhelm Argos

HPU (2-20, 2-8) captured their second win of the season, as they defeated Notre Dame de Namur University 67-57. The game was closely contested until the Lady Sea Warriors broke the scoring wide open with a 19-2 run to close the first half. The momentum appeared to swing toward NDNU (6-16, 5-5) as they cut the lead to just five points with five minutes to play. But HPU went on a 7-0 run of their own to seal the victory.

Ashley Jenkins gave the Argos all they could handle, as she led all scorers with 20 points and knotted five assists. Jocelyne Norris (14 pts, 3 steals) and Constance DeCaires (13 pts) also had strong performances for the Lady Sea Warriors, and Kanani Thomas led the team with four assists. Sea Warriors Fall To Vulcans

Constance DeCaires scored a career-high 18 points, but it wasn't enough, as the HPU women's basketball team fell to confernce opponent UH-Hilo, 83-59, at Kaiser High School.  Kanani Thomas also added 14 points for HPU, who fell to 1-20 overall, and 1-8 in PacWest play.  Amy Kaaiakamanu and Sheila Azevedo each scored 20 points for the Vulcans, as they improved to 4-14 on the year, and 3-7 in conference.

The Vulcans took the early lead, connecting on 42 percent of their field goals in the first half.  Krystlelyn Omlan scored 10 of her 13 points in the period to lead the way, as Hilo made 5-9 shots from three-point range.  The Sea Warriors managed just 26 percent in the half, and trailed 41-28 at the break.

In the second half, HPU looked to make a run behind DeCaires, but could not cut into the lead as Kaaiakamanu and Azevedo combined for 25 second half points.  Hilo also won the rebounding battle, finishing with a 50-39 advantage, including 24-14 on the offensive end.  Shannon Miyashiro led HPU with a game-high 12 rebounds.

Silverswords Squeak By Sea Warriors

In another nail-biter coming down to the final minute, the HPU women's basketball team dropped a 74-70 heartbreaker to Chaminade University at McCabe Gymnasium in Honolulu.  Ashely Jenkins led HPU (1-19, 1-9) with 23 points, while Shannon Miyashiro also finished in double figures with 10.  Brittnee Fonnesbeck led Chaminade (3-14, 3-7) with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds.

A close game from start to finish, neither team established control, as the lead never reached more than four points either way in the opening period.  The lead changed hands 11 times, with the Sea Warriors holding a 33-30 lead at the break.

The second half was more of the same until the midway point when a mini Chaminade run put them up by seven points.  HPU would claw back, tying the game with just under four minutes to play, setting up another exciting finish.

Exchanging baskets and free throws the rest of the way, Chaminade was able to hang on however, behind Fonnesbeck and Cummins Simrin, who finished with 19 points on the night.

HPU will look to bounce back in a Saturday afternoon matchup with the Vulcans of UH-Hilo.  Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m. at Kaiser High School.

HPU Falls In Rematch With BYUH

BYUH's Latoya Wily had another big game with 27 points and 17 rebounds, leading the Seasiders over HPU, 76-55 at Kilauea Recreation Center.  Kanani Thomas paced four Sea Warriors in double figures with 12 points, while also dishing out five assists.

The Seasiders (7-10, 5-2) came out firing, scoring the first five points of the game, and jumped out to a 24-13 lead midway through the first half.  Wily provided the inside punch, while Kayla Burningham locked in from long distance, burying 4-6 shots from three-point range.  BYUH shot 63 percent in the period, and 70 percent from behind the arc.

The Sea Warriors (1-18, 1-6), who shot 37 percent from the floor in the half, misfired on all seven three-point attempts, and trailed 49-26 at intermission.  Thomas led the way with seven points, while Shannon Miyashiro tallied six points and pulled down four of the team's 11 first half rebounds.

A mini run by HPU midway through the second half cut the deficit to 14 points, but Wily was huge down the stretch, answering every HPU basket to secure the win for the Seasiders.  Burningham finished with 18 points for BYUH, while Miyashiro (11 points), Constance DeCaires (10 points) and Natalie Mitchell (10 points) finished in double figures for HPU.

Sea Warriors Edged By Seasiders

After securing their first win of the year over the weekend, the HPU women's basketball team looked to make it two straight over conference opponent BYU-Hawai'i, but the Seasiders withstood a furious HPU rally, escaping with a 67-65 win at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.  Ashley Jenkins paced HPU with 17 of her 19 points in the second half, while Latoya Wily led the Seasiders with 27 points and 18 rebounds.

A close game from the tip, both teams struggled offensively in the first half, as HPU (1-17, 1-5)shot 30 percent from the field, while the Seasiders (6-10, 4-2) managed just 27 percent.  Natalie Mitchell led HPU with nine points at the break, and was the only Sea Warrior to make more than two field goals.

In the second half, BYUH extended their 31-28 halftime lead to 14 points with nine minutes to play behind Wily's 21 second half performance mostly from the free throw line.  The freshman attempted 21 shots from the line in the game, just four less than HPU attempted as a team.  To their credit, HPU chipped away however, trimming the lead to just two points after Kanani Thomas's second consecutive trey made it 57-55 with 3:48 remaining.

After exchanging baskets and free throws, HPU found themselves with the ball, trailing 67-65 with seven seconds to go.  Jenkins took the inbounds pass and drove the lane, but her shot at the buzzer rimmed out, giving the Seasiders the hard fought victory.

HPU will look for redemption next week, when they take on the Seasiders again on Friday, January 26th at Kilauea Recreation Center.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Sea Warriors Get First Win At Hilo

Ashely Jenkins recorded her third double-double of the year with 19 points and 11 rebounds, leading the HPU women's basketball team to their first win in program history, 63-48, over the Vulcans of UH-Hilo in Hilo, Hawai'i.  Natalie Mitchell also added 12 points for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 1-16 overall, and 1-4 in PacWest Conference play.  Ashley Kualii led Hilo (3-9, 2-2) with 14 points, while Sheila Azevedo finished with a double-double of her own with 12 points and 15 rebounds.

It didn't look good early on for the Sea Warriors, who fell behind 11-0 to start the game.  HPU would fight back however, eventually tying the game at 22-22 with 6:22 left before haltime, and taking the lead into the locker room at the break, 34-32.

A 7-0 run by the Vulcans to start the second half put them back up by five, but the Sea Warriors would respond, outscoring the Vulcans 29-10 the rest of the way, holding them to just 29 percent from the field after intermission.  HPU would answer every Hilo basket with one of their own, and increased their lead down the stretch from the free throw line.

Defensively, they played their best half of the year after the break, and finished with a season-low 14 turnovers on the night.

HPU will look for two in a row when the host BYU-Hawai'i next Wednesday, January 17th at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.  The Seasiders took the first meeting on November 28th, 82-66 in Laie.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Vulcans Outlast Sea Warriors

Despite a game-high 20 points from Ashley Jenkins, the HPU women's basketball team dropped their fourth conference game of the year, 67-57, to the Vulcans of UH-Hilo in Hilo, Hawai'i.  Kanani Thomas also finished in double figures with 11 points, while Shannon Miyashiro pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.  Krystlelyn Omlan led the Vulcans with 19 points.

After starting slowly in their last game, the Sea Warriors (0-16, 0-4) did just the opposite, playing a strong first half to trail by just three points (32-29) at the break.  They connected on five shots from behind the arc, shooting 32 percent overall from the field in the period.

Unfortunately, the Vulcans (3-8, 2-1) shot a little better at 39 percent, and picked it up in the second half (44 percent), outscoring the Sea Warriors 35-28 in the period.  HPU finished at 33 percent in the second half, and 33 percent overall for the game.

Statistically, the Sea Warriors dominated the boards, outrebounding Hilo 45-34, including 12-4 on the offensive end.  They also added to their conference leading free throw percentage, finishing at 80 percent on the night (8-10).

The teams meet again on Saturday with tip-off scheduled for 12:00 p.m.

Slow Start Helps Dixie State Defeat HPU

Despite 12 points and 13 rebounds from Ashley Jenkins, the HPU women's basketball team fell 65-56, in a non-conference matchup to Dixie State College at St. Andrews Priory Gymnasium.  Shannon Miyashiro also added 11 points for HPU (0-15), while Jessica Carver led the Rebels (10-7) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

The Sea Warriors dug an early hole, connecting on just seven field goals in the first half and allowing the Rebels 16 offensive rebounds in the period.  Miyashiro led HPU at the break with seven points, as they trailed 38-21, managing just 19 percent shooting from the floor.

In the second half, the Sea Warriors regrouped and cut the deficit to just eight points (58-50) on a jumper by Jenkins to complete a 7-0 run with just under two minutes left to play.  The Rebels converted on 7-9 free throws down the stretch however, keeping the game out of reach despite the furious second half rally by HPU, in which they outrebounded the taller Rebels 25-24 in the period.  They also doubled their shooting percentage in the second half at 39 percent, and finished at 86 percent from the free throw line (12-14) for the game.

The Sea Warriors will look to build on their second half performance later this week when they travel to Hilo, Hawai'i for two conference matchups against UH-Hilo on Thursday and Saturday, January 11th and 13th.  Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, and 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Sea Warriors Fall On Buzzer-Beater

Searching for the first win of their inaugural season, the HPU women's basketball team put themselves in position to do so against conference opponent Notre Dame de Namur, but fell at the buzzer, 51-49, at King Intermediate School.  Constance DeCaires led HPU with 12 points, while Jocelyne Norris added 11.  Grace Hartman paced the Argos with a game-high 15 points.

After rallying back from a nine-point second half deficit, the Sea Warriors (0-14) tied the game at 49-49 with 30 seconds left to play.  A missed shot by the Argos (2-12, 2-1) gave HPU the ball with three seconds remaining, as they quickly called a timeout to set up a final play.  NDNU's Ashely Wilson jumped the play however, stealing HPU's inbounds pass to convert a layup as time expired, sending the Sea Warriors to their third conference defeat.

Statistically, HPU outshot NDNU 39 percent to 33 percent, but were outrebounded 37-32, including 13-7 on the offensive end.

HPU returns to action on Monday, January 8th against Dixie State College at St. Andrews Priory Gymnasium.  Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m.

Antelopes Run Past Sea Warriors

Looking to bounce back in their rematch with Grand Canyon University, the short-handed HPU women's basketball team battled hard but came up short, falling 92-58 at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.  The Sea Warriors again dressed just eight players, playing without leading scorer and rebounder Ashley Jenkins, who sat our her second consecutive game while serving a three-game suspension for disciplinary reasons.  In her absence, senior Constance DeCaires led HPU with a game-high 24 points on 9-12 shooting from the field.  Rosalyn Nelson led four GCU players in double digits with 23 points.

HPU (0-13, 0-2) stayed close for the in the first half, until a 22-8 run by GCU (8-4, 2-0) gave them a 45-26 advantage at halftime.  HPU managed just nine field goals and were outrebounded 14-5 on the offensive glass.  They did shoot well from the free throw line for the second-straight night however, converting 8-10 in the half, and 17-22 for the game.  After shooting just 38 percent in the first period, they found their stroke in the second half, hitting on 48 percent of their shots, finishing at 43 percent on the night.

Next for the Sea Warriors is a conference matchup with Notre Dame de Namur University on Saturday, January 6th at King Intermediate School.  Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m.

Sea Warriors Drop Conference Opener

Rosalyn Nelson scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Grand Canyon University to a 102-52 win over HPU in the conference opener for both teams at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.  Jocelyne Norris recorded a double-double for the Sea Warriors with career-highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Shannon Miyashiro also finished in double digits with 10 points.

GCU (7-4) led from the tip and never trailed, as Nelson tallied 16 of her points in the first half.  Norris kept HPU (0-12) close, scoring all her points in the period on 8-14 shooting from the floor.  The Sea Warriors could not match the height of GCU however, as the Antelopes outrebounded HPU 27-19, including 14-4 on the offensive end to take a 56-24 lead into the locker room.

Unlike their previous games, the Sea Warriors went cold from the field in the second half as the Antelopes were able to stretch out the lead shooting 49 percent, compared to just 24 percent for HPU.  The Sea Warriors did shoot well from the free throw line however, connecting on 21-26 attempts, as Miyashiro finished 8-8 and Constance DeCaires 9-10 on the night.

HPU will look to bounce back tomorrow in a rematch with the Antelopes at 4:30 p.m. at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.

HPU Tripped Up By Northwood

Despite 19 points from Ashley Jenkins and 14 from Constance DeCaires, the HPU basketball team dropped their second game of the Hoop-N-Surf Tournament, 81-61, to Northwood University at McKinley High School.  Jodi Ostergren led Northwood (5-6) with 19 points, while Megan Starnes added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

HPU (0-11) again dug an early hole, trailing by 10 points before scoring their first basket.  Jenkins was held scoreless in the first half, as the Sea Warriors committed 16 turnovers in the period, and trailed 44-20 at the break.  DeCaires carried the load for HPU in the half, recording eight points and three rebounds.  Jocelyn Norris also had a solid half with four points and six boards.

Jenkins finally got going in the second half, but Northwood would respond to every HPU run, as the Sea Warriors were unable to cut into the lead, despite shooting 45 percent from the field in the period.  They also did a better job defensively, holding Northwood scoreless from the three-point line (0-6) after halftime.

HPU will have two weeks to prepare for the upcoming PacWest Conference season.  The opener will be at home against Grand Canyon University on Wednesday, January 3rd.  Tip-off is at 4:30 p.m. at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center.

Sea Warriors Fall To Missouri Southern

Ashley Jenkins scored 16 points, and Kanani Thomas added 11, but the HPU women's basketball team could not recover from a 26 percent shooting first half, falling to Missouri Southern, 76-54, in the first game of the Hoop-N-Surf Tournament at Kaiser High School.

The Sea Warriors (0-10) started slow for the second consecutive night, managing just 21 first-half points on 6-26 shooting from the field.  Fortunately four of the six field goals were from long distance, thanks to Thomas, who connected on three of her four attempts.  The much bigger Lions had their way inside, getting 19 of their 37 first half points from three post players.

Despite the slow start, HPU hung in there, and eventually went on a 13-3 run midway through the second half, trimming a 23-point lead to 13 with five minutes left to play.  Missouri Southern (8-0) would respond however, ending the game on a 15-6 run for the final margin.

HPU freshman Shannon Miyashiro had her streak of three consecutive games in double figures snapped, but had a solid game with seven points and five rebounds.  Lone senior Constance DeCaires also had a nice game with six points and six rebounds.  Tynesha Pierce led the Lions with 16 points, while Dana-Mae Robbs recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

HPU will wrap up the tournament tomorrow, with a showdown against Northwood University at McKinley High School.  Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.

HPU Outgunned By Missouri Western

Inga Buzoka scored 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead 14th-ranked Missouri Western to a 91-49 victory over HPU at St. Andrews Priory Gymnasium.  Ashley Jenkins paced the Sea Warriors with 20 points, while Shannon Miyashiro reached double figures for the third consecutive game, finishing with 14.

HPU (0-9) had no answer for Buzoka, who at 6-3 was unstoppable in the paint.  She shot 5-7 from the field in the first half, tallying 11 points in just 13 minutes of action.  Teammate Yanique Javois supplied the perimeter scoring, recording 10 of her 12 points in the opening period to give the Griffons (8-0) a 47-19 lead at intermission.  As a team they shot 53 percent, compared to just 24 percent for HPU.

The second half was more of the same, but the Sea Warriors continued to compete, as Jenkins and Miyashiro earned every point from the field and foul line.  Jocelyne Norris also had a nice game, finishing with 10 of HPU's 27 rebounds.

HPU looks to bounce back, as they will compete in the 2006 Hoop-N-Surf Tournament tomorrow and Wednesday.  HPU will take on Missouri Southern at 6:00 p.m. at Kaiser High School tommorrow, and Northwood on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at McKinley High School.

Sea Warriors Fall In Home Opener

Ashley Jenkins poured in a career-high 31 points but it wasn't enough as the HPU women's basketball team dropped their home opener, 70-62, to Central Washington University at St. Andrews Priory in Honolulu.  Jenkins also grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year, while Shannon Miyashiro also finished in double digits with 11 points.  Brandie Bounds led three Wildcats in double figures with 22 points.

It looked bleak early on, as the Wildcats (7-1) jumped out to a 19-5 lead seven minutes into the game, as the Sea Warriors (0-8) struggled to find their offensive rhythym.  A pair of free throws by Jenkins completed a 12-5 run for HPU however, as they closed to within seven with 8:17 left in the half.  Not to be outdone, CWU would respond by closing out the half on a 12-3 run of their own, to take a 36-20 lead at intermission.

Undersized and undermanned, HPU hung tough behind Jenkins, who scored 11 consecutive points in the final four minutes to single handedly cut an 18 point deficit in half with just over a minute to play in the game.  Time was not on the Sea Warriors side however, as CWU would make their free throws down the stretch, spoiling the first ever home women's basketball game in school history.

To their credit, HPU out rebounded the much taller Wildcats 37-34, and out shot them 43 percent to 37 percent.

The Sea Warriors look to bounce back when they take on Missouri Western University on Monday, December 18th.  Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. at St. Andrews Priory.

Sea Warriors Stumble In Maui

Despite a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds from freshman Shannon Miyashiro, the HPU women's basketball team fell to the Vulcans of UH-Hilo, 63-51, at the Lahaina Civic Center in Maui, Hawai'i.  Ashley Jenkins led the Sea Warriors with 17 points, while hauling in eight rebounds as well.  Shelia Azevedo led four Vulcans in double digits, recording a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

HPU (0-7) fell behind early, but clawed back to take the lead on three consecutive jumpers by Miyashiro.  A basket by Jenkins and a three-pointer by Kanani Thomas completed an 11-2 run to give HPU a 22-16 advantage with 3:37 left in the half.  The Vulcans (1-6) would respond however, as Azevedo scored five points in a 9-0 run to close the period, giving them a 25-22 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Vulcans stretched the lead to 12, outscoring HPU 10-1 in the first three minutes.  Back-to-back buckets by Jenkins and a pair of free throws from Miyashiro brought HPU to within three points, but it was as close as they would get, as Hilo would answer every Sea Warrior run down the stretch.

HPU will look to bounce back in their home debut, when they take on the Central Washington Wildcats on Friday, December 15th.  The game will take place at St. Andrews Priory with tip-off at 6:30 p.m.

HPU Edged In Overtime

Ashely Jenkins posted career-highs of 28 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the HPU women's basketball team fell in overtime to Chaminade University, 83-79, at McCabe Gymnasium in Honolulu.  Jocelyne Norris and Kanani Thomas also had their best game of the season for the Sea Warriors, as Norris posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Thomas finished with 17 points on 5-9 shooting from three-point range.  Brittnee Fonnesbeck led four Swords in double figures with 31 points, while also pulling down 13 rebounds.

For the second consecutive night, HPU (0-6) controlled the tempo, jumping out to the early lead.  Defensively they harassed Chaminade (1-3) into 33 percent shooting, including 12 percent from long range, en route to a 36-31 advantage at the break.  HPU shot just 32 percent, but controlled the boards and took advantage at the free throw line, sinking 8-10 in the period.

The second half went back and forth, with both teams taking turns at quick scoring runs.  Jenkins and Thomas were deadly from the perimeter, while Norris battled in the post with Fonnesbeck, as each team was able to answer the other down the stretch.  With 3:14 remaining and the Swords comfortably ahead by 10 points, the Sea Warriors dug down and made one last push, tying the game in the final seconds to force overtime.

In the extra period, free throws proved to be the difference, as the Swords converted on 8-12, while HPU failed to connect on just three attempts.

Next for HPU is a matchup with UH-Hilo on the island of Maui.  The teams will play the game at a neutral site to showcase women's NCAA II basketball across the state.  Tip-off is set for  2:00 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Sea Warriors Fall In Laie

In a tale of two halves, the HPU women's basketball team raced out a 17-point first half lead, but fell to host BYU-Hawai'i, 82-66, at the Cannon Activities Center in Laie.  Ashley Jenkins led HPU with 21 points, while Kelly Morey and Constance DeCaires also finished in double figures with 17 and 12, respectively.

The Sea Warrios (0-5) looked determined from the tip, as point guard Jordan Tangonan's three-point play ignited a 15-4 run eight minutes into the game.  Morey scored eight points during that stretch, including a perfect 2-2 from three-point range.  Minutes later, a layup by Jenkins made it 29-12 with just under 10 minutes to go in the half.

HPU suddenly went cold however, as they missed their next nine shots and turned the ball over nine times. As a result, the Seasiders (1-2) would go on a 20-4 run of their own, trimming the Sea Warrior lead to 33-32 at the break.

In the second half, HPU again started strong, as a three-point play by DeCaires pushed the lead back to eight with 14:02 left to play.  After back-to-back three-pointers by BYUH's Lesina Funaki brought them within two points, Artevia Wily scored seven-straight points as the Seasiders outscored HPU 21-5 in the final 5:28.  Wily finished with 24 points on the night, while Funaki added 14.  Latoya Wily also had a big game for BYUH with 16 points and 18 rebounds.

The Sea Warriors will be back in action on Sunday, December 3rd when they take on Chaminade University at McCabe Gymnasium in Honolulu.  Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m.

HPU Drops Road Finale

Improving in each game they play, the first-year HPU women's basketball team played one solid half of basketball before falling the Cal State University Los Angeles, 80-69, in Los Angeles, California.  Ashley Jenkins had a monster game for HPU (0-4), finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists.  Freshman Shannon Miyashiro also had a solid game with 12 points and six rebounds.  Shayna Stanley led CSULA with 20 points.

A see-saw affair in the first half, the Sea Warriors battled hard behind Jenkins and Kelly Morey's seven first half points.  Jenkins was unstoppable in the half, scoring 16 points in the final 7:44, as the game was tied, 37-37 at the break.

In the second half, an 11-4 run by CSULA gave them a seven point lead, which they stretched to 16 with 4:55 left to play.  Jenkins who scored 18 points in the first half, was held to just six after intermission.  Rachel Hancock stepped up in her place, scoring all eight of her points in the second half for HPU.

The Sea Warriors will head home, but stay on the road with their next game at BYU-Hawai'i on Tuesday, November 28th.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Sea Warriors Comback Bid Falls Short

In the third game of their California road trip, the HPU women's basketball team battled hard, but fell 50-36 to host Cal State San Bernardino.  After allowing an average of 100 points in the first two games, the Sea Warriors stepped up on defense, and took better care of the basketball despite the loss.  Rachel Hancock just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, while Ashley Jenkins, who struggled in the two losses, came off the bench to record nine points, six rebounds and four assists.

HPU (0-3) improved in all areas but their shooting percentage, managing just 21 percent in the first half, and 26 percent for the game.  They trailed 33-15 at intermission, but came out in the second half and outscored Bernardino 21-17, holding them to just 22 percent shooting from the floor.  They cut their turnovers nearly in half, and were competitive on the glass, getting outrebounded by just six, 42-36.

Cal State Bernardino was led by Vanessa Wilt's 22 points and 10 rebounds.

The Sea Warriors will have a day off tomorrow, before their final game of the road trip at Cal State University-Los Angeles.  Tip off is at 5:30 p.m. (3:30 p.m. HST) on Monday, November 20th.

HPU Falls In Bakersfield

In their second game in as many days, the HPU women's basketball team fell to Division I Cal State Bakersfield, 106-44, in Bakersfield, California.  Ashley Jenkins paced HPU with 11 points, while Bakersfield native Jocelyne Norris also finished in double figures with 10.  Jessi Loring and Rhondi Naff led five Roadrunners in double figures with 16 points each.

Turnoves were again a problem for HPU, as they committed 41 miscues on the night.  It was also a tale of two halves for the second night in a row, as the Sea Warriors shot 50 percent in the first half, and just 29 percent in the second.  Free throws, or lack therof for HPU was also a factor, as they attempted just five the entire game, compared to 27 for Bakersfield.

Despite the loss, there were still postives for the young, first-year Sea Warrior program.  Jenkins had a solid all-around game, adding six rebounds and six assist, while freshman Shannon Miyashrio pulled down seven rebounds against the much taller Roadrunner team.

HPU will be in action again tomorrow with a 7:00 p.m.(5:00 pm. HST) matchup at Cal State San Bernardino.

Sea Warriors Drop Season Opener

In the first ever women's basketball game for Hawai'i Pacific University, the Sea Warriors could not overcome a large first half deficit, dropping a 94-48 decision to The Master's College in Santa Clarita, California.  Kelly Morey led HPU with 14 points, while Jocelyne Norris grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Turnovers hurt the Sea Warriors all night, as Master's College scored 36 points off 39 HPU miscues.  HPU fell behind early in the first half, thanks to a 21-2 Master's run in a span of 5:23.  The taller Mustangs also controlled the boards (44-32) and points in the paint (44-24) behind 6-4 Kelsey Shugert and 6-1 Annie Gillespie.  Though trailing 51-28 at halftime, HPU did shoot fifty percent from the floor (12-24), including 4-8 from behind the arc.

The Mustangs put the game away in the second half, starting the period with a 18-4 run for a 37 point lead.  After shooting the ball well in the first half, the rim was unkind in the second half for HPU, as they managed just 23 percent from the floor, and just 1-11 from three-point range.

Kinsley Mittel led six Master's players in double figures with a game-high 17 points.

The Sea Warriors will continue their California road trip with a game at Division I Cal State Bakersfield tomorrow.  Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m.HST).

Rainbow Wahine Run Past HPU

In their first competition against a team other than themselves, the HPU women's basketball team found out one thing in their 104-42 exhibition loss to the University of Hawai'i.  Size does matter.  The smaller Sea Warriors were outrebounded, 62-36, and the UH defensive pressure forced HPU into 33 turnovers, in the opener for both teams at the Stan Sheriff Center.  The Sea Warriors will open their official season on November 16th, at The Master's College in Santa Clarita, California.

Though the score didn't indicate it, HPU did play well in spurts, but the frontcourt for the Wahine was too much to handle.  Their 31 offensive rebounds nearly matched HPU's total, as 6-4 twin towers Brittany Grice and Iwona Zagrobelna combined for 20 points and 20 rebounds.  They also held a 48-12 scoring advantage in the paint.

Too their credit, the Sea Warriors never gave up, playing hard for first-year, and former UH assistant Liz O'Brien.  They shot 44 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, and showed some toughness, not backing down to the bigger UH team.  Rachel Hancock led HPU with 10 points, while Natalie Mitchell and Jordan Tangonan added nine and seven respectively, off the bench.  Ashley Jenkins finished with a team-high eight rebounds.

Sea Warriors Finalize Roster

With three weeks remaining before the first official day of practice, head women's basketball coach Liz O'Brien has finalized her roster with the addition of five student-athletes, including three highly touted freshmen.

Looking to make an immediate impact is Maria Roller, a 5'10 post player from Medora, Indiana.  A rebounding machine, Roller finished second in the state, grabbing 13.1 rebounds per game, including one game in which she hauled in 27.

Also looking to contribute right away is 5'10 swing player, Rachel Hancock.  The only international player on the team, Hancock comes to HPU from Ontario, Canada, where she was a member of the elite Provincial team in high school.  A very athletic and versatile player, she can play both forwards and the center position.

Chelsey McQuate is the third freshman of the group, and hails from Spaulding, New Hampshire.  Also 5'10, she can play both forward positions, and was an all-state selection as a junior and senior.

Rounding out O'Brien's late additions are local products Jordan Tangonan and Constance DeCaires.  Tangonan, a 5'4 junior from Ewa Beach, played high school ball at Kamehameha Schools in Honolulu.  She played two seasons at South Puget Sound Community College, starting 19 games last season, averaging five points, three assists, and nearly three rebounds per game.

DeCaires, a 5'10 senior from Kailua joins the team as a walk-on.  The former OIA East honorable mention performer at Kailua High School brings maturity, leadership, and skill, which will come in handy for HPU's young team.

O'Brien Inks First Recruiting Class

Hawai‘i Pacific University head women’s basketball coach Liz O’Brien officially announced her inaugural recruiting class for 2006-07. Joining the Sea Warriors in their first year of NCAA competition are four junior college players, two local high school standouts, and one current HPU student.

Leading the way is NWACC (Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges) second team performer Kellie Morey. Morey, was a two-year starter and team captain for Clackamas Community College in Bend, Oregon. Originally from Bend, the 5’8 guard averaged 12.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. The first player inked by O’Brien, Morey brings not just athleticism and scoring ability, but she also brings leadership, which according to her coach is going to be very important with a brand new team.

Also headed to HPU are a trio of players from Taft Community College in Taft, California. Ashley Jenkins, a 5’8 guard/forward from Ft. Washington, Maryland is the most heralded of the three, averaging 15 points and three rebounds per game. “Ashley can flat our score,” said O’Brien. “We’re looking for her to be our go-to player.”

Along with Jenkins, teammates Natalie Mitchell and Jocelyne Norris will also don the blue and green this fall. Mitchell, also 5’8, hails from Las Vegas, Nevada and is best described as a solid all-around guard who plays tenacious defense. Last season at Taft, she posted six points and four rebounds per game. “Natalie will guard our opponents best perimeter player,” said O’Brien. Norris, a 6’1 center from Bakersfield, California brings some needed size to the program. She averaged three points and four rebounds per game, and will be looked upon to “alter shots, rebound, and score a little more in our system than she was asked to last season,” said O’Brien.

Also committing to the Sea Warriors are Hawai‘i high school all-state performers Kamia Smith and Shannon Miyashiro. Smith, a 5’7 point guard from Radford High School was the OIA West Player of the Year as a senior, averaging 10.6 points and five assists per game. She was also named honorable mention all-state. “We got a steal in Kamia,” said O’Brien. “Her basketball potential is unlimited.”

Miyashiro, a 5’10 small forward from Roosevelt High School earned second team OIA East recognition, as well as honorable mention all-state honors. “Shannon’s size will create match-up problems because she can play facing the basket, or she can post up smaller defenders,” added O’Brien.

Current HPU student Lauren Lawson is the seventh student-athlete signed by O’Brien. The North Stafford, Virginia native was a standout high school player on a two-time district championship team. A combo guard, she is described by O’Brien as “a great ball handler with extreme quickness.”

O’Brien also recently received verbal commitments from two highly touted post players, but NCAA rules prohibit commenting on them until their National Letters of Intent are signed and delivered.

HPU Tabs O'Brien As Women's Basketball Coach

Hawai‘i Pacific University has announced the hiring of Elizabeth “Liz” O’Brien as its inaugural women’s basketball coach. O’Brien, who has more than 10 years of NCAA coaching experience, comes to HPU from the University of Hawai‘i where she served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the Wahine basketball team under Head Coach Jim Bolla.

“After reviewing the qualifications of some really wonderful candidates, we have found a coach who has the experience, energy and enthusiasm not only to create this team, but also make it competitive from the start. She has experienced several different coaching styles, and brings with her the best from each. We are honored to have Liz O’Brien join our staff, and look forward to many successful years,” said athletics director Jill Ward.

Prior to joining the University of Hawai‘i, O’Brien completed her second stint as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy at West Point, helping guide Army’s women’s basketball team to a 15-13 record and third place finish in 2004-05. In 2002-03, her first year with the Black Knights, she helped the team advance to the Patriot League championship game for the first time in 13 years. As the top assistant, she was responsible for recruiting, guard development, game preparation, video analysis, and scouting.

“Liz has been a great asset to me and the University of Hawai‘i,” said Wahine basketball coach Jim Bolla. “It’s a great opportunity for her, and with her enthusiasm and young mind, it will be a great benefit for HPU.”

O’Brien’s coaching career began in 1997, serving as assistant women's basketball coach and assistant compliance director at Dowling College in Oakdale, NY. A year later, she moved to the University of South Carolina-Aiken, where during her two-year stay, she was the recruiting coordinator. In 1999-2000 the team compiled a 15-12 record, its first winning season since 1993-94. She later coached at her alma mater, Hofstra University, from 2000-02, and returned in 2003-04, after her first year at Army.

“I’m really excited about this opportunity at Hawai‘i Pacific,” she said. “HPU has a lot to offer and I’m looking forward to being a part of the community, and providing the local talent a chance to stay home to further their education and play basketball at the NCAA Division II level.”

O'Brien graduated from Hofstra University with a marketing degree, while lettering in basketball and soccer. She was a captain of the basketball team, and also received the Hofstra University Athletic-Academic Award in 1996.

HPU Adds Sports For New Pacific West Conference

Hawai’i Pacific University, along with the three other Division II schools in Hawai‘i, welcome Notre Dame de Namur University and Grand Canyon University to the Pacific West Conference beginning in fall of 2006. With the departure of Montana State-Billings University and Western New Mexico University last year, the four Hawai‘i schools played this past season as “independents”, receiving a waiver from the NCAA to keep the conference in name, while searching for new members. In order to be eligible for conference membership in the NCAA, a conference must consist of a minimum of six member institutions who sponsor at least ten sports, with two team sports for each gender.

To comply with conference membership regulations, HPU, along with Chaminade University, Brigham Young University Hawai‘i, and the University of Hawai‘i-Hilo, will add women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s soccer to their athletics programs. The ten sports HPU will now sponsor on the championship level will be men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s golf, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, and softball. Men’s tennis and baseball will remain sponsored sports at HPU, but will compete as independents.

“We are excited to have new members within the conference, while maintaining the friendships and rivalries created with the four Hawai‘i institutions,” said athletics director Jill Ward. “The addition of the three sports will make us more compatible with other institutions on the mainland, and help further expansion. In addition, the new sports will create more opportunities for local high school student-athletes to participate at home. We hope to see increased community support for these teams and our currently sponsored teams as well.”

A waiver has been sent to the NCAA by the institutions requesting full conference status beginning this fall. Benefits of a conference include automatic qualifiers for postseason play, national recognition, conference grant money, and stability in recruiting and scheduling efforts.
