ALCOHOL

USUAL FORM: Clear, amber, or dark liquid in bottles, cans, etc.
HOW USED: Consumed orally.
SYMPTOMS: Shortness of breath; irregular heartbeat; loss of coordination; loud, obnoxious behavior; unsteady walk; slurred speech.
SHORT-TERM EFFECTS: Violent behavior, mood changes, memory loss, hallucinations, impaired learning ability, inability to feel pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, cardiac arrhythmia.
LONG TERM EFFECTS: Severe depression and other emotional problems, isolation from friends and family, stupor, cirrhosis, liver failure, cancer, gastritis, ulcers, pancreatitis, heart disease, angina, heart attack, malnutrition, gynecological and sexual problems, birth defects, coma, death.
Combinations of alcohol with other drugs are very dangerous because alcohol intensifies a drug's effects. This can often result in unconsciousness or death. In addition, research indicates that children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk than other youngsters of becoming alcoholics.

LONG-TERM EFFECTS: Weight loss, electrolity imbalance, damage to nervous system, brain hemorrhage, hepatitis, death.
STIMULANT: COCAINE

SYMPTOMS: Increased heart and respiratory rate, higher blood pressure, dilated pupils, decreased appetite, sweating, headache, blurred vision, dizziness, sleeplessness, anxiety, moodiness, tremors, loss of coordination, collapse.
SHORT-TERM EFFECTS: Stroke, fever, heart failure.

DEPRESSANTS

NOTES: Risks are multiplied when used in combination with alcohol.

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS: Drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, coma.
LONG-TERM EFFECTS: Tolerance, dependency, AIDS, endocarditis, hepatitis from contaminated syringes, death. Addiction in pregnant women can lead to premature, stillborn, or addicted infants.
"DESIGNER" DRUGS
TYPES: Analogs of fentanyl (narcotic), meperidines (narcotics), amphetamine (hallucinogens), and phencyclidines (PCP and hallucinogens).
