Laura Birse, Germany

When I was a teenager, I had that big unreachable dream of Hawai’i, and now, a decade later, my courage, will-power, and positive destiny have brought me to HPU to precede my goal in oceanography. My motto of life is “never give up and never lose your spiritual freedom-do what you wish to do!”

After several years of educational experience in Germany, I crossed the Atlantic Ocean to get my AA degree of General Sciences in Florida at Valencia Community college.

A high GPA and a membership in an honor society allowed me to receive the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship at HPU. And here I am in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and my dream to become an oceanographer is coming true.

Currently, I am a treasurer of National Biological (Tri-Beta) Honor Society. HPU’s professors are supporting my goals, interests, and projects.

I would like to note that my life as a student at HPU is not just four walls of a classroom or a library. In my spare time, I am a passionate canoe paddler of Koa Kai Canoe Club and a surfer whose dream is to ride the biggest wave possible.

I would like to encourage everyone who is planning to enroll in HPU by saying:  “Where there is a will, there’s always s a way”.
Mahalo to my family, and HPU Ohana!

How do I get admissions at Hawai'i Pacific University ?

Admission to HPU is based on academic ability and potential for success at the undergraduate and graduate level. Academic ability is evaluated by the applicant's past academic performance, recommendations, and performance on standard tests (i.e. TOEFL, GMAT - MBA only, GRE, SAT).

Although not required for admission, professional work experience as well as involvement in organizational or community activities may be used in the evaluation. A holistic approach is used, and no one factor will exclude an applicant from consideration. The University is seeking students who have demonstrated the ability and motivation to do undergraduate and graduate level work.

What are the application requirements?

Basic requirements are as follows:

  • Complete an application for undergraduate or graduate studies.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP).
  • Pay a $50.00 non-refundable application fee by credit card, bank wire, or by sending an international check. (click here for our payment options).
  • Submit a signed copy of the HPU Statement of Financial Sponsorship.
  • Mail an original or certified copy of a bank statement showing that you (or your sponsor) have an account which holds sufficient funds to cover the total estimated costs for your first academic year of study.
  • Submit TOEFL.
  • Submit SAT (Undergraduate students only).
  • Submit GRE (MSIS and MAs only).
  • Submit GMAT (MBA students only).
  • Mail certified copies of 10+2 completion certificates (Undergraduate candidates); and undergraduate completion certificates (graduate candidates).
  • Submit two letters of recommendation (Graduate students only).

Do I have to take the TOEFL test?

All international students must show proof of their English proficiency by any of the English proficiency tests accepted by the University (no exceptions!)  (www.hpu.edu/englishtest).

Is there an application deadline?

While HPU has no application deadline, we recommend that you apply early.  For Spring enrollment (January), your application should arrive in April or June, but no later than October.  For the Fall semester (September), you may send your application as early as January, but no later than June.

Where do I send my application?

You may send your application to the Indian Student Coordinator, Guilherme Albieri:
Hawai'i Pacific University, International Center
1164 Bishop Street, Suite 1100   Honolulu , Hawai'i 96813   U.S.A

What are the costs?

At HPU, full-time tuition for the main semesters, fall and spring, is $7,430 for undergraduate studies and $7,920 for graduate studies.  Additional costs such as housing, food, college-related expenses are estimated at approximately $6,852 per semester (4 months). Please check here for all tuition fees

What about housing?

The following options are available:

  • On-campus housing at the Hawai'i Loa Campus is generally enjoyed by younger students, as three students share a small room.
  • Off-campus housing: Century Campus Housing Management, L.P. (CCHM) - a national leader in privatized management of student housing - is currently offering HPU students accommodations in the Kalo Terrace. The property is approximately three miles from the HPU downtown campus, normally a 15 minute ride by city bus. Visit their web site at www.campushousing.com/kaloterrace .
  • Renting your own apartment.  While this may be the least expensive option, it takes about 2-3 weeks to find a nice, furnished, affordable, shared apartment near the university at short notice. Students often stay in university housing for the first semester and then find housing on their own.  However, students who do insist finding their own apartments should arrive early, so they have a minimum of two Sundays (Sunday is the major rental day) to look at apartments.  Apartments are generally managed by a rental agent who charges the landlord, not the student.  Rental agreements are usually for a period of six months.  If there is no fixed rental term, termination of a rental contract in the US is 30 days.

How do I obtain a visa?

Once you have been accepted to HPU and you have submitted all required documents, HPU will issue an I-20 and mail it to you. The I-20 and your passport must then be presented to the US embassy in your area to request an F-1 student visa.   Complete information may be found at the HPU visa section at: I-20 Form and F-1 Student Visa

Click here to obtain a "VISA Guide: Tips for a successful interview".

What about health insurance?

  • You must have health insurance and submit certain health records (measles and mumps). Please refer to the Health Insurance/Medical Information section for details and make sure that you read it carefullly.
  • Students who choose to take out health insurance in India must ensure that their insurance will certify all HPU requirements in writing, in English, including a non-reimbursement policy (this  means other than regular doctor visits, insurances must pay directly to the health care provide, not to the student first!).
