Excellence in Undergraduate Writing Awards

A Maximum of Four $500 Cash Gifts to be Awarded to HPU Students

Nomination Deadline: January 15, 2010

The Hawai'i Pacific University Excellence in Undergraduate Writing Awards annually recognizes outstanding writing assignments completed by undergraduate students.

HPU faculty may nominate student papers written during the period from the Spring 2009 semester through Fall 2009 semester. There are four (4) categories of academic and professional subjects.

Essays or research papers must be accompanied by a nomination form, available as a PDF file located to the left of the page, and be sent to:

Papers must be received or postmarked no later than: Friday, January 15, 2010.

Participants will be notified of the results by February 24, 2010.

The recipients and nominating professors will be guests at the Hawai'i Pacific University Scholarships and Awards Banquet in which the winning students will receive a cash award of $500 along with a certificate. Recipients of the undergraduate writing award are required to attend the Academic Awards Banquet.

Papers will be judged according to how well:

The writer presents original ideas in a thoughtful and convincing voice.

Checkmark

The writing displays a pattern of development, reflected in well-sequenced paragraphs, with an effective beginning, rewarding middle, and satisfying end. Paragraphs should also have coherently ordered sentences focused on a single topic.

The writer's assertions are supported with explanations, illustrations, data or expert opinions.

Checkmark

The writer uses an appropriate documentation method.

Checkmark

The writer uses vocabulary that is well-suited for its purposes and that the spelling, grammar, and punctuation is used in a nondistracting manner.
