HPU Signs Agreement with China College of Marine Technology

Hawai'i Pacific University President Chatt G. Wright and Dr. Younger Wu, president of China College of Marine Technology and Commerce, signed a sister-school agreement at a recent ceremony attended by 23 representatives from the Taiwan school, HPU administrators and faculty.

“We are pleased to set up this framework for mutual educational cooperation,” Wright remarked, adding that China Marine’s extensive curricular offerings in the ocean sciences complement HPU’s own academic majors in oceanography, marine biology and environmental science.

During an exchange of gifts, Der-wei Wu, chairman of China Marine’s board of trustees, told Wright that he and his colleagues look forward to exploring jointly with HPU programs to enable each institution’s faculty and students to benefit from their educational partnership.

China Marine, founded in 1965, enrolls more than 4,000 students in the department of navigation, marine engineering, marine tourism, food science, international trade and communication engineering. Located on the outskirts of Taipei, the college is constructing a second campus along the Keelung River at Tanshui.

Message from the Dean

Welcome to the College of Natural Sciences!

The College of Natural Sciences has rigorous, traditional, hands on programs in Marine and Environmental Sciences, Biology, Biochemistry, and a well developed Pre-Medical and Health Sciences program available to all students at HPU regardless of major.  We hope these web pages allow you to explore these exciting programs, get to know our accomplished faculty, and experience the wide range of opportunities available to students in the sciences.

We are ushering in a new and exciting era for the College of Natural Sciences here at Hawai‘i Pacific University. Based on a strong foundation of excellent undergraduate instruction in the classroom, laboratory and field – the College of Natural Sciences is seeking to expand our faculty, facilities, and most importantly, opportunities for our students.

In this process we intend to preserve all the best aspects of our program – our dedicated and talented faculty, our small classes and individualize instruction, and our initiatives to get students out into the environment of our incredible “living classroom” here in Hawai‘i.

The College of Natural Sciences is home to undergraduate programs that range from premedical studies to traditional physics. Please explore the different majors under the Academic Programs bar and the profiles of the faculty that have shaped and developed these degree programs and courses.  Additionally, we are working closely with our Makapu’u affiliate, Oceanic Institute, teaching classes and conducting research projects that provide opportunities for student practicum experiences in this working research institution. I invite you to visit the OI website at www.oceanicinstitute.org as well.

Our new graduate program in marine science began in fall 2007 and now has 21 students enrolled. The Master’s of Science in Marine Science (MSMS) program came to life as an integration of our robust undergraduate programs and the recent affiliation with the Oceanic Institute. It not only provides a research intensive training program where graduate students work side by side with their professors, but it also enhances our ability to expand the depth and breadth of the College of Natural Sciences more generally, attracting high quality faculty and students to all our programs.

I hope you find all the information you need to get a full understanding of the diversity, depth and breadth of our program, as well as an appreciation of how we incorporate the rich and diverse flora and fauna of Hawai‘i into our curriculum and learning experiences.

I welcome you to contact us with any further questions or requests for materials.

Thank you!
