Dr. Hanh Nguyen, Professor of Applied Linguistics, joined the TESL Programs at Hawai'i Pacific University in 2005. Her research interests include the development of interactional competence in a second or professional language, social interaction in language learning situations, learners' transforming identities, and Vietnamese applied linguistics. To pursue these topics, she prefers a bottom-up approach, utilizing conversation analysis, systemic functional grammar, and discourse analysis. Her recent and forthcoming articles appear in Applied Linguistics, The Canadian Modern Language Review, Language and Education, Text and Talk , The Modern Language Journal, Critical Inquiry in Language Studies - An International Journal, Communication and Medicine, the Journal of the American Pharmacists Association, and Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman Area.

At HPU, Dr. Nguyen teaches Second Language Acquisition, Research in Computer-Assisted Language Learning, Technology and Language Teaching, Evaluation in ESL/EFL, and Language Classroom Experience, among other courses. Her goal is to help students become language teachers who not only can teach effectively but also are reflective of the teaching and learning processes.

Dr. Nguyen was born and raised in Vietnam. She received a B.A. in English and Teaching English as a Foreign Language from the University of Hue. Her graduation thesis was a pragmatic contrastive analysis of inviting in Vietnamese and in English. After receiving her B.A., Dr. Nguyen continued her graduate studies at the University of Wisonsin-Madison. Aside from an M.A. in Applied Linguistics with a focus on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and a Ph.D. in English Language and Linguistics with a dissertation on the development of communicative skills by pharmacy students, Dr. Nguyen is proud to have biked through five chilly Wisconsin winters.

Before coming to HPU, Dr. Nguyen has taught English, Vietnamese, and applied linguistics at the University of Hue, the University of Wisconsin-Madision, and the University of Hawaii-Manoa. In addition, she has lectured at Vietnam National University and various programs in Honolulu. She has also travelled to several cities in the US, Europe, and Asia to present her research at international conferences.

In her free time, Dr. Nguyen enjoys flower photography, design, translating short stories from English to Vietnamese, and creative writing in Vietnamese. Her favorite music is folk songs from countries around the world.
