Reserve Materials Collection: Faculty Requests
Faculty may place materials on reserve in the University Libraries to avoid unnecessary mass distribution of handouts and to make selected readings available to a greater number of students.
Books (library or personal copies) and photocopied materials may be placed on reserve at the circulation services desk at either library.
PLEASE NOTE: Only materials that are in compliance with the copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) will be accepted.
To place items on reserve please complete the appropriate form for:
Audiovisual Material Books Photocopied Materials Student-created Works
Please read the instructions and other guidelines carefully and provide all information as requested. Signatures are required on the Photocopied Materials and Student-Created Works forms. Request forms lacking the proper signatures will be rejected. Failure to fully complete a form will delay processing and may result in the rejection of the request. If you require additional assistance, call Atherton Library at 236-3505 or Meader Library at 544-0210.
Faculty must bring the item(s) and the accompanying form(s) to the circulation services desk at the library where the items are to be made available for their students. Allow up to a maximum of three working days for processing.
PHOTOCOPIES:
Time Limit: ONE SEMESTER (unless written permission is obtained from the copyright owner and submitted to the library)
No more than ONE ARTICLE from any single issue of a journal or magazine.
No more than ONE CHAPTER or 20% of the total content of a book.
No more than THREE COPIES of any single article will be accepted. Each photocopied article must include a complete citation to the source material (book or journal issue information) on the first page. Attaching a copy of the cover or title pages of the issue is recommended.
NO PHOTOCOPIES FROM CONSUMABLES (commercially produced workbooks, exercises, standardized tests, test booklets, or answer sheets). Photocopies of exercises/exams created by an instructor are permitted.
COURSE TEXTBOOKS:
As a general practice, the University libraries do not place a copy of a book that has been designated as a required course textbook on reserve.
Only in those instances when the University bookstore does not have copies of the book readily available for sale should an instructor put a copy of the required text on reserve.
The instructor will have to supply the copy for reserve. The instructor should remove the book from reserve status once copies of the book become available in the University bookstore.
