Student centered approach

You will develop personal mentoring relationships with the professors, because you will be learning from people who really want to know you and contribute to your success.

Even with more than 8,200 students, our average class size is under 25 students which facilitates mentoring relationships between students and faculty.

Our professors are distinguished scholars and respected researchers who will help making the student’s future a success as a global citizen.

The HPU main campus in the business district of Honolulu has the dynamic energy you would expect from a downtown setting, as well as access to the business and financial center of the Pacific. It is home to the College of Business Administration and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, offering for example Travel industry Management, International Relations, Journalism, Psychology, International Business, Marketing, Diplomacy and Military Studies and Finance. Academic Program Information

Hawai‘i Pacific University (HPU) offers degree programs (Bachelor and Master programs), English Language Programs, as well as short-term, non-degree study programs (Study Abroad Program, Exchange Program, International Bridge Program).

Undergraduate Programs

If you decide to apply to Hawai‘i Pacific University, there are approximately 50 undergraduate (Bachelor) programs to choose from and experience a class size of less than 25 students. For more information, please visit www.hpu.edu/major.

A transfer student will have his/her courses reviewed in order to receive transfer credits. HPU also recognizes credit from multiple sources, such as Advanced Placement (AP), the College Level Examination Program (CLEP), and the International Baccalaurate (IB). Read more on www.hpu.edu/transfer.

Graduate Programs

Students from Hawai‘i and around the world attend one of HPU’s thirteen unique Master programs or numerous graduate certificate programs. For more information, please visit www.hpu.edu/graduate.

Concurrent Programs

You can start the Master’s degree while still being an undergraduate student.  Through the Concurrent Program eligible HPU undergraduates may enroll in certain graduate courses and earn both graduate and undergraduate credit simultaneously for the same course. A student has the opportunity to earn three graduate credits for every concurrent course completed. A maximum of 12 credits may be earned in the program, which shortens the Master by one full semester. Read more about our concurrent programs.

Study Abroad Programs

The program allows international students to study at Hawai'i Pacific University for one or two semesters. International students typically receive transfer credit at their home universities for courses taken at HPU. Students pay HPU's regular full-time tuition. Read more about our study abroad programs.

Go global!

As an undergrad or graduate student at HPU you will have the option to study one or two semesters in another country. We have partner universities all over the world, making this a unique opportunity to explore and learn more about another culture. Our students will therefore not only study in one, but two, or more, new environments. Do you want to visit Australia, Mexico, Italy, Brazil or maybe Thailand? At HPU this is possible and what better way to become a global citizen? Here is a list of the different countries.

International Bridge Program at HPU
International Bridge program at HPU is designed for international students whose English proficiency is below HPU’s requirements or who placed into advanced ELS levels. Students take 4 courses (total 12 credits), specifically designed for the program.

ELS

ELS is the international leader in academic English-language preparation. For those who score less than HPU’s requirement, ELS provides intensive English training, semi-intensive English training and their American Explorer program on HPU’s downtown Honolulu campus. HPU will accept a certificate of completion of level 112 of the ELS intensive program, which will waive HPU’s TOEFL requirement.

Students Exchange Programs
These programs allow current undergraduate and graduate HPU students to study in a foreign country for a certain period of time while receiving credits toward their HPU degree (in most cases). In return, HPU accepts an equal number of students from these partner schools around the world. Students pay tuition at their home universities.
Career Preparation
We highly recommend our students (degree seekers only) to apply for an internship after 9 months of studies at HPU. You will have the chance to work with an American employer, learn new skills, explore career interests, and meet new social and intellectual challenges.  Upon graduating from HPU you will be given the opportunity to apply for a working permit called OPT (Optional Practical Training), which is valid for one year. This is a great chance to receive working experience in the U.S., applying all the academic knowledge into a future career.

Admission and Application Requirements

The academic year operates on a semester system, with regular Fall (September - December) and Spring (January - May) semesters, as well as shorter sessions including one winter (December - January) and three summer sessions (May - August).
Applications are accepted year round, on a rolling basis; however we recommend applying at least 3 months before the semester to allow enough time for immigration and visa processes.
We admit students in all semesters: fall, winter, spring and summer I, II and III. Online, print and walk-in applications are accepted.

Application Fee for both undergraduate and graduate: USD $ 50
Please do not send cash!

International Scholarships

At HPU, we want to make a private university education affordable. Therefore, we offer competitive academic scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $10,000 per academic year, for outstanding international students, which are renewable each year until completion of the undergraduate degree, as long as you stay in good academic standing. You are eligible to apply only as a first-year or transfer student.

Additional Scholarships

We do offer scholarships for several sports, for example: soccer, volleyball, basketball, tennis and cheerleading. For more information please enter the athletics website.

We also offer choir and band scholarships.

Apply to HPU

We strive to make it easy for your child to complete the application to apply to HPU.  HPU has a “rolling admission” process, so it is possible to apply throughout the year since there are no set deadlines to meet. Our students may initiate their HPU studies in the fall, spring, or summer semesters. If you are interested in transferring to HPU, you will find more information on the transfer website.

  • Strategically located in the center of the Pacific Rim, which is the region with the fastest growing economies in the world

  • Ranked by the leading American consulting firm Mercer as the:

ü  Number one city based on quality of living in the United States.

ü  Second cleanest and healthiest city in the world.

Forbes magazine also ranked Honolulu as the third safest city in the United States.

Student Life

The Center for Student Life holds regular on-campus activities and events to enhance the college experience at HPU. These activities are great opportunities to take a break and have fun, and we encourage our students to get involved in them. At HPU, the classes will be rigorous and academics will need to be the top priority. You will want to balance the academic side of college life with the social side. Participating in on-campus and off-campus activities will help to relieve stress, make new friends, and just have fun.

Examples of student activities arranged by the university are:

  • Hiking trip – join your fellow students for an unforgettable hike to Maunawili Falls. You will hike a 1 ½ mile well-worn path through the Hawaiian rainforest before reaching the falls with its deep, cool, pools. Includes lunch and transportation. A very popular excursion among our students, and it’s for free!
  • The Bishop Museum - Not only does this multibuilding museum have the world's greatest collection of natural and cultural artifacts from Hawaii and the Pacific, but recently it has added a terrific new Science Adventure Center, specializing in volcanology, oceanography, and biodiversity. You will become kids again in this interactive, fun environment.
  • Kailua Beach Kayaking – This guided paddling and snorkeling tour takes place on the calm-reef protected waters of Kailua Bay. Enjoy the sun, meet Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles, and learn about Hawaiian history, marine life, and our island’s geological formations. Includes lunch and transportation to a cost of $45 (a $125 value).

Make Your Home in Paradise

As a future student you should consider two options before coming to Hawaii; either to live on campus, or off campus.

On Loa Campus we offer you the resident halls located in a tropical environment surrounded by lush rainforest at the foot of the beautiful Ko'olau mountain range in Kaneohe. Our halls house approximately thirty-five students in each hall, suite style with one Resident Advisor in each residence hall.  All rooms are either double-occupancy or triple-occupancy rooms.

You may be more interested in finding your own place off campus.  Most of our graduate students live off campus and many of our undergraduate students have this life-expanding experience as well when they come to HPU.  There are many options for off-campus living including an independent company which focuses on student housing in Waikiki, meeting new HPU friends (and potential roommates) on HPU Pipeline, renting houses, apartments and condos as individuals or together.

For more information about housing, please contact commuter services.

In Hawaii, in addition to enjoying Hawaii’s beautiful beaches, you can choose to practice various ocean activities such as surfing, kite-surfing, body boarding, stand-up paddling…and the list goes on. Hiking is also popular in Hawaii and the hiking options are many.

You will be able to build a network of family, friends and working colleagues from different parts of the world. You will all bond in a stunning environment, making the experience a memory for life. This is a great opportunity for you to take advantage of one of the most beautiful locations on earth and enjoy four years of high-quality of life, while preparing for a successful career at HPU.

Aloha!
