HONOLULU — Nan, Inc., one of Hawai‘i’s largest general contractors, is supporting Hawai‘i Pacific University Athletics in a big way. The company is donating $80,000 to Hawai‘i Pacific University to establish the Nan, Inc. Soccer Fund.

“Nan, Inc. believes in giving back to the community and supporting local athletic programs,” said owner Nan Shin. “Each year, the state of Hawai‘i produces many talented athletes. The Department of Athletics at Hawai‘i Pacific University provides the opportunity for these talented local student athletes to participate at the collegiate level while remaining in Hawai‘i.”

“This gift from Nan Shin and Nan, Inc. helps HPU further develop an already strong soccer program,” said HPU President Geoffrey Bannister. "As an integral part of HPU’s student life experience, athletics is highly valued as a learning platform for teamwork, diversity appreciation, practical ethics and determined application to getting the most out of one’s talents.”

Nan, Inc. will make the donation over a period of four years. For local student-athletes who are a part of the program, the donation will “provide added assistance to athletes in need of financial aid that have the chance to be a part of the soccer community,” Shin said.

The fund will also help with student support, travel expenses, program and equipment expenses, field maintenance and infrastructure expenses.

“We appreciate the immense generosity of Nan Shin and Nan, Inc. for the support of our soccer programs. The gift will help our student-athletes in their continued pursuit of excellence,” said Vince Baldemor, HPU’s Executive Director of Athletics. “On behalf of the soccer program and Hawai‘i Pacific University, we would like to say mahalo.”

“As a coach of youth sports for more than 20 years, I have witnessed how athletics help build a sense of community and increase school pride,” said HPU Vice President of University Relations Sam Moku. “We’re honored and grateful for Nan Inc.’s support of our student athletes. Hawai‘i Pacific is truly fortunate to have partners such as Nan, Inc. rallying the Sea Warriors forward.”

HPU competes in the Pacific West Conference, the largest NCAA II conference in the West region. Last season, three HPU Men’s Soccer Team players were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-West Region Team. On the 2013 All-PacWest Men’s Soccer Team, HPU had two players on the first-team and one each on the second, third, and honorable mention teams. HPU landed three players on the Pacific West Conference 2013 All-PacWest Women’s Soccer Team.

The support from Shin and his company will certainly help in preparing future student-athletes, Baldemor said.

“We appreciate our relationship with Nan, Inc. and look forward to a stronger partnership in years to come,” Baldemor said. “Go Sea Warriors!”
