Longtime poetry contest at HPU offers cash prize for local literature
November 27, 2013
HONOLULU — The deadline for Hawai‘i Pacific University’s James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry has been extended. Entries for the award — which has celebrated literary arts and writers in Hawai‘i for more than a decade — must be postmarked by Dec. 16. The annual contest offers a $250 cash award. The winner's outstanding poem or group of poems will also be featured in Hawai‘i Pacific Review, the annual literary magazine published by the university.
To participate, send three poems with a 100-line limit each along with name, address, phone number, email address, names of poems on a cover page and a five-line biography to: James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry, 1060 Bishop Street, LB 7A, Honolulu, HI 96813. No author identification on the actual poems, please. Poems must be typed to be considered.
Participants must have resided in Hawai‘i for at least one year. Submitted poems must not have been previously published. Manuscripts will not be returned. HPU employees are not eligible.
Associate Professor of English Patrice M. Wilson will judge the competition this year. Wilson is an award-winning poet, author of one full-length book of poetry and three chapbooks, as well as many other individual poem publications. She also serves as the award coordinator. For more information on the contest, contact Wilson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (808) 544-1108.
The winner will be announced by HPU in January 2014, and the award will be presented at HPU’s annual Ko‘olau Writing Workshops, scheduled in March 2014. The author will also be asked to share his or her poetry and writing experience with HPU students and faculty during the spring semester.
This event is supported in part by the Hawai‘i Literary Arts Council and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. The James M. Vaughan Award for Poetry, which began in 2000, is named after HPU alumnus James M. Vaughan, who established a fund to enhance the literature and poetry programs at the university.
