HPU competes at national advertising competition

HONOLULU — Hawai‘i Pacific University students are in Phoenix to compete at the American Advertising Federation (AAF) national competition. The team, known as Akamai Advertising Agency, will present their marketing campaign to AAF National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) judges on Thursday, June 6. This marks a repeat appearance for HPU. At last year's national competition, HPU placed 16th, placing them in the top 11 percent in the country.
This year's HPU team developed a 20-page marketing campaign and a 20-minute presentation in response to a real world case study presented by this year's client, Glidden Paint. The students were allocated a $10 million dollar budget for their integrated advertising campaign.
The competition gives advertising students an opportunity to take on a case study, reflecting a real world situation, provided by a corporate sponsor. Students must research the product and its competition, identify potential problems and develop an integrated communications campaign for the client. Each student team then “pitches” its campaign and ideas to a panel of judges. More than 150 colleges and universities take on the NSAC challenge every year. Akamai Advertising won the AAF District 13 competition in Hawai‘i in April, to advance to the finals.
Students will also have networking opportunities with top experts in the field, including Peter Cashmore, founder and CEO of Mashable, John Travis, vice president of Brand Marketing of Adobe Systems Inc., and others.
The members of the 2013 HPU winning team include presenters Joseph Peach Graves, Ian Boat, Analisa Cortes, Jairus Kiyonaga and Nina Dorthea Terjesen; alternate presenters Katelyn Urquhart and Shannon Rohan; and team members Ashlee Badua, Jaclyn Chew, Janise Cole, Jade Gonzalez, Kristin Leierer, Kelsie McKinney, Ariale Montomery, Glenn-Andre Nilsen and Daniel Thu.
